Nope. I priced one at the dealer. It will be cheaper to get a custom paintjob, so I shied away from it.

I am thinking the same, but I saw a paint set I really like. They price it at $4495

If its an older model paint set, definately check Ebay. I bought one from this guy last year and it was perfect and a good price. He said he had more, so you may want to check with him. http://myworld.ebay.com/closeout-motorcycle-parts/

I typically dont shop on Ebay, because I got shafted a few times, but a buddy told me this guy is good. Wish I could remember his name, Tom or Tim.

Anyways I like the factory paint, it is very very nice. Some of it is even numbered, limited edition. They may make 100 of a certain body, and number them all 10 of 100, 11 of 100. etc.

The best place for tins is E-bay. Be careful not to buy repaints, they may be full of bondo. You should only buy factory take offs, where someone bought the over priced HD set and they have no need for stock. If you buy aftermarket, buy them through your painter, you may pay a little more, but the painter wants the best possible sheetmetal to start with. (less filler) You'll end up with better metal (not all tins are created equal) Many painters won't paint aftermarket, check around, there are many of us out there that do, and do it well. As for the MoCo, they do sell blank tins, they are expensive, but they are also high quality.

$4495, what kind of bike? How many parts? Did that price include tins? Which paint job was it?

As a painter, I have to point out that these are numbered sets, which means there are 100 to 200 copies of your paint job in the world. Not custom to me, thats more like conversion. Remember the custom vans of the 70's, companies jumped on the bandwagon and cranked out "conversions", a custom for the masses. This made them more affordable to a larger market. These HD paint jobs are mass produced copies, which should make them less than my one off hand-laid custom paint jobs, not more.

dgator is right, it is cheaper to get a custom paint, and its more personal. Unless overpaying gives you a warm fuzzy feeling, I would reccommend finding a good custom painter.

Good luck,
Jim

In 1999 I purchased a new fxdwg and paid way way too much for a factory custom paint set . I was not thrilled with the quality either. It was a rootbeer candy with tangerine flames . The flames looked like a 2 year old taped them off. The edges were very jaggered . If I was to do it again I would find a local custom guy and have it done. When I was younger we had a local guy named Warren Alessi who was one of the best. He was know locally for painting Dan Aykroyd's bikes . Nothing like a 1 of a kind custom .
