Over a thousand deer a year killed on the three main roads I use up here. Throw in the moose, cattle, horses, and turkeys, and I get real life experience every day from March to November. Screw practice.
I wouldn't say I "practice" on the bike anymore than I do in the car. But when I'm on the bike, I'm considerably more aware of my surroundings, much more conscious of other drivers intentions, and always careful to know where my escape routes are. I'm a firm believer in it's not a question of if, it's a question of when and how bad. Been there, don't that, got the scars to prove it.
I say it's not practice if you're doing it for real so, no, not much practice time, too busy doing it for real. I'll do an occasional panic stop once in a while when not needed just to keep up with the abs brakes as much any other reason. They're not always the sliced bread some would like to think they are but that's another thread.
I don't practice- I just naturally have to do it day to day.
A recent event had me passing legally through an intersection when a black SUV looked past me and pulled out broadside into my lane.
It was so close I had to reach out with my right hand to push against his front driver's side fender to get a little extra jink to my maneuver.
There was a bus stop there and I could clearly hear everyone there shouting, "WHOA" in anticipation of my demise that didn't happen.
I just rode on and got my head back into looking for the next obstacle in front of me- it's just a part of riding.
I WANT to practice. This is my first touring bike and I'm not entirely comfortable with it yet..
What are good practice techniques where I could practice this as well as low speed maneuvers with as little risk as possible to dropping the bike? It IS brand spanking new, after all. I'm a little hesitant to put it through some extreme paces but at the same time, I know that's how we learn, and kinda what I need to do. I plan to take some Advanced classes this spring/summer.. There's nothing local scheduled so far this winter.. :-(
Planning to take it to a big empty lot and just mess around a bit. I took the New Rider course in my early 20's, and I can remember all of those exercises so that's what I plan to do..

its all about Habits... the more you practice or do it, the more it becomes a natural reaction.... which is a lot faster than if you have to think about doing it..
