That seems to be the standard approach with Sportsters and big guys. I'm 6'2" and about 215 lbs (97 kg) and had 2 different dealers tell me that I was too big for a Sportster. I didn't care what they thought and bought a 1200 Custom and rode the hell out of it, perfectly comfortably and perfectly safely on all kinds of roads including highways at 80+ mph. My wife is about 110 pounds (~50 kg) and rode with me often. The bike handled the combined 147 kg just fine. Get what you want and can afford.

The fact that you are coming on here to get informed opinions means that you are not a "sucker." So the salesman pegged you wrong.
His loss. Go buy your Sporty from someone else, and enjoy it.
(And yes, an 883 or 1200 will move you with no problem at all, you'd have to be a LOT bigger than this for us to tell you "you're too huge for a Sportster.")
