Default First Bike

Looking for advice on which bike i should get for my first. I used to ride motocross so im not brand new to the 2 wheel world but never owned a road bike. Im 5'10" 140 so tall(ish) and skinny. So im thinking sportster would be the easiest place to start. With a budget of 5-6k ive been looking at the nightster, iron 883 and iron 1200. what would you guys recommend as a good starter bike but not outgrow within a season or two?

Best to test ride them at a dealer and see if an 883 is enough. I outgrew it without two months, others never do. Also, get insurance quotes before buying anything.

an 883 can be had for way less than 5k unless you must have a brand new ride.

not saying, my expirence is gospel but...

i worked my way upto an 883 and beyond. my original 883 is still with me. it's not an 883 anymore but thats where it started. it was a hand full at first but, I appreciated the progression. I started out on an 80s metric 500cc. the sporty has grown with me. a 883 is fine, it can be upped power wise (within reason) and is a good place to get you in to the fold.

To be honest, the HD "street" series is also a good place to get started. most folks would say not though.

have fun, be safe, and WEAR GEAR!!!

I've been riding a long time and I would be perfectly happy with an 883.

I've got a similar stature to you and my first Harley is/was a 883. I thought it was a good place to start considering the weight increase over the hondas I owned. While I will say I did eventually up the power on it (Hammer 1250 kit), I thought the 883 was a good step to ride for a few seasons. Like Cvaria mentions, used for the Sportster is such a better deal than new.

Personally I find my 1200 Sportster to be so flexible in its power delivery that I don't think it would any problem for a novice to ride . So either skip the 883 stage or , as previously suggested , skip the whole Sportster stage and go straight for a Dyna .

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm going to go test ride a few within the coming week. But I'll keep a closer eye on the 883. Can always big bore kit if need be.

I think either would be great, I loved my Sportster 1200 when I had it, but I sure wouldn’t pass on a 883 Iron. Great looking bikes!

Nothing wrong with a sporty at all, great bikes and can haul some major a$$ when tuned right!
When I had my 1200 I was 5'10 and 220. Did many, many miles of two up riding with that bike with no complaints! Good luck, there are many reasonbly priced sportys to be had.
