No one likes it when people 'cut' in line and that's what lane splitting comes off as. Legal or not, I think it pisses most people off whether they 'understand it' or not. No one in a car is expecting it and as far as I'm concerned it's dangerous enough out there with out playing chicken with a bunch of cars that aren't expecting you to zoom buy, loud pipes blasting in their open window. It kind of says 'fvck you' as you go by.
'course that may just be the attraction for a lot of riders.
Lane splitting is a way of life in CA. It is not limited to Harley's with loud pipes. I seen Goldwings, Kawasaki's and Suzuki's do it. All motorcycles do it. But lets face it, we are talking about California. If it is that bad, they would have made illegal a long time ago. When I lived there I dont remember ever hearing of an accident killing anyone while safely splitting lanes. Not saying it never happens but it very uncommon.
What I don't understand is.....if say five lanes of traffic are stopped say due to an accident leaving one lane open, how does allowing motorcycles run up between lanes and fill the one open lane make sense? If everyone took their proper turn traffic would move better for all. This has got to be the scenario that pisses drivers off. I know one of my pet peeves is when everyone sees the sign saying lane closed and that lane is the one moving because everyone allows that traffic to tuck in at the last possible second. People jump into that lane and fly up to the end then move over slamming on the brakes causing the slinky to start. If that lane is stopped moving it seems everyone moves a bit smoother. So flame away I don't see lane splitting as a good thing. We want all the rights of the road that cages have plus a bunch of extra's because we bought a Harley!
That makes perfect sense. Which means it will be the minority view for sure.
99% of drivers here "get" the purpose of lane splitting and they are accommodating, even going as far as moving over to give you more room if they notice you. There are some jackholes, but thankfully they are few and far between.
+1
There are ******** on 2 wheels and 4, but generally speaking, most drivers are accomodating (or at least don't try to block you). I've had more trouble from crotch rockets than cars.
I remember riding through Indiana a few years ago and getting caught in a complete standstill on I-70 due to an accident. I split lanes for about 10-12 miles knowing full well that it was not legal in IN. I had several trucks squeeze me during that episode. It's like they were on their CBs planning together just to make sure I wouldn't get through. When they squeezed me on one side I'd simply go around the other side and flip 'em off Easy Rider style as I passed. Twice while I was passing on the left I had trucks run me off the shoulder into the dirt. *********!
thats the kind of stuff makes me want to shoot at people.. Id never actually do it but I still get that feeling lol

I did unload a clip years ago on the side of a truck that tried 3 times to take me out on I-70 tore up the rear duals and that saddle tank , main reason I don't carry anymore I found my breaking / stupid point .

id say here in the bay area 99% of people are very good about letting bikes split. even the semi trucks will move over and wave you by. here in the bay area there are lots of MC clubs and the weather is nice enough to honestly ride all year long. so motorcycles are kind of a way of life around here. and everyone understands that. ive even had motorcycle police pull over and let me by when splitting because the usually cruise slow in traffic. lifes nice here in CA. i couldn't imagine living in a state where it snows and you cant ride, storing your bike for the winter is crazy
