Where would you like to be accepted ?
If you want to hang out with the RUB, go with # 1 or #2
If you want to hang out with the common people
go with #3
Of corse there is option #4
buy a brand new non CVO bike and Build it as you go
that is what I did and it will all be paid off in April 2014

If you can find something close to your vision on the used market... you will save a shiat-ton of money by sticking the other guy with the depreciation. Although my bike isn't "new"... it's everything I wanted, I get lots of compliments and I can be fairly certain I will never pull up next to one like mine at any bar, rally or run. I bought it in the winter from a guy pretty hard up for cash... and he had already done a TON to it... It's still almost worth what I'm into it. Not that resale matters to me... but value does.

Shopping for a Road King now... and plan to have a bitchen' and beautiful tour bike for well under $20k by this time next year.

Good luck man... it's an exciting journey.
If your 'tequila sunrise' is a testament to #3 ... then I am all about #3 ...

Although #4, as laid out by 6 gun, is the way I went ...

Definitely ... if you have something else to ride (in the interim) ... go route 3 and make it your own self ... more interesting and you end up with a custom that you really like ... and don't have to worry about resale value or riding up to someone on the same bike ...

Good luck with the plan ...

I bought a 2010 FLHTK and have been working the bike to what I want over the last two years. Yes, I could have bought the CVO and been done. I was not worried about resale becuase I dont plan on selling this bike, at least not for a long time, or maybe never. I have made the mods I wanted to the bike and love them, stereo (bad ***) and chrome do-dads, but motor more importantly has been done right. For a touring bike it is very fast and I love it. I think if you dont care about warrantee and selling the bike, and you enjoy doing at least some of the mod work yourself, then get a bike that is as much a part of you cuase you took the time to mod it out the way you wanted and has your partticular look. IF that does not concern you and you want most of the mods right out of the gate then go for the CVO, they are sweet, but some other guy has the same bike. I think that having the ability to change it up is half the fun of owning one. JMOP

Doing it yourself is, IMO, the whole point. Who gives a &^% about chrome if you had to get somebody else to do the job? The bike will tak you the same place without that stuff, so it's the pride in doing it yourself that makes it worth doing. Otherwise, just ride it stock. Pipes? That's a 20 minute job that involves a couple of wrenches - why pay to have it done?

One CVO tends to look like another to me, so I'd just buy a good stock one and ride the hell out of it. I bought a new SAAB many years ago because I wanted a SAAB. Drove it for 16 years and the only thing I did was upgrade the stereo. It didn't need anything else.

Another vote for #3. It's your vision, make it exactly what you want it to be.

#3 for me. I like the look of the CVO's but I will never buy one. I just could not add or change anything on one of those.

Another vote for 3 - especially if you already have a bike to ride in the interim.
