I got a cheap pair of lined ones from leatherup for like $45. Went cheap in case I didnt like them. Now I zip em on everytime the temp is below 50. Easy on, easy off. I just have to remember to keep my feet off the highway pegs so the wind doesnt blow up them!
I wore chaps for years until I discovered leather pants.
With pants you have options.
On a cool day I sometimes just wear lightweight thermal underwear under the pants, and on cooler/cold days I wear the thermal underwear and jeans under the leather pants.
Due to the weight of the leather pants I wear thick suspenders and they work great!

There are plenty of mornings and evenings in North Dakota that having the extra layer for warmth is a good thing. I had a pair of textile over pants for awhile. I had them melt on my pipes once and they were just a pain to store on the bike. Chaps are much more useable.
