I think my OL is going to get me a Garmin GPS for the bike for Xmas (both our cars have integrated units, so no need to move them). I told her I can't justify the cost of the "motorcycle" units at $600 - $700, and to just find a nice one with lifetime maps, which are in the $100- $200 range all day long.
I've looked at a few cases on Amazon and they all seem to have a number of reviews that say they filled with water, or the mounts came apart in some way. So I'm wondering if anyone has some solid recommendations for a decent handlebar mount case. Don't need bluetooth, not planning to wire it in for turn/by/turn directions (not at the moment), don't need XM/Sirrius.
I would suggest a standard handlebar Ram mount for the GPS. I carry a Glad zip lock bag in my windshield bag. This slips right over the GPS and you can “zip” it up to the mount to keep water from coming up from the bottom.. This has worked for me in any number of downpours over the last 4 yr’s. You can also see through it well enough to follow your rout.
PS: if it is raining so hard that this doesn’t work, I pull over and wait it out.

+1 -- ziplock bag has worked for me for years. Like OP I just can't justify a Zumo when my Nuvi 40LM gets me where I need to go!
Thanks for the advice guys. I was checking out the ram mounts and they have a waterproof case option that's pretty pricey but their regular mount options look pretty darn cool. The ziplock bag idea seems like a good one, and this isn't something I'm likely to have on the bike at all times.
I have a RAM Aqua Box. Large but does the trick. I did have to drill a hole in the back to route the power cable in to it. You can save some $$$$ if you get the black mounts vs. chrome.
The mount works with other RAM products. I have one for my iPod for use when I am not going someplace I have never been before.
When I replaced my Magellan GPS, I looked at a bunch of different makes and styles. One of the things I had to have was one with a battery that lasted eight or more hours and that really narrowed my choices. I didn't want to hard wire anything into the bike. I wound up with a Zumo 220 for about $300.00. It comes with windshield mount (only used in my car), handlebar mount, free lifetime maps and a bunch of features. It might be worth looking into.
Would like to hear a real-world user review from any Zumo owners. Is there really a difference?
The Zumo *is* crazy expensive, but I still bought one. Having a built in cradle without needing a power plug is nice.
That & water proof are probably my 2 biggest pluses over the nuvi.
I forgot which nuvi it was, but one is pretty similar to the Zumo in terms of features.
Bluetooth, MP3, upload custom routes, route sharing, track log, custom waypoints, glove friendly, etc...
