Back in 1971 my ride was a Kawasaki H1. Before any smarta$$ comments read up on what it was. Which was pretty impressive for it's time and purpose. I didn't really care for it only because it's impressive qualities weren't my 'cup of tea'.
Anyway when I used to park it at school, UNLV, I would put a dog 'choke collar' through the rear wheel. One day I was late for class and didn't take time to put on the chain/lock. And after class the H1 was gone.
It could have been a coincidence, but I always suspected that someone had gotten a key at the Kawasaki shop and checked every day for me not to lock it with the chain. My point is that sometimes, usually(?), such thefts are a crime of opportunity. And if a scooter has a little chain/lock, or a security system, a thief might look for a better opportunity.
Or you could depend on a gun, as someone in these security threads always mentions. Of course that would mean you could never get out of sight of your scooter. How else would a gun be a deterrent? And, depending on variables, insurance may not cover the true value of a scooter either.
The money someone spends for a Harley, especially if their scooter has a lot of bling, is far more then the miniscule price of a security system. My current scooter came with it or I wouldn't have put the security system on. Of course since my H1 was stolen I have always carried a heavy chain/padlock on whatever I owned/rode. Until now at least.
My stock HD alarm makes a lot of noise when the bike is moved just a bit - better than it remaining quiet as it gets stolen or until they can cut the battery cable ... and do as they please
btw - when the battery is disconnected with the key off it still gives some brief alarm noise ... better than zip ... a seat lock will slow down getting to the battery cable - slightly anyway
ask someone to set theirs off - you'll hear what I'm talking about
some piece of **** tried to steal my bike a few weeks back..took the nelson Rigg cover tried to rip the seat off as well.i have a disc lock and a steering lock.I went out and got one of them Gorilla alarms $100 on amazon..Its loud and was a pain in the *** trying to find some were to put the box for the alarm on a sportster, had to move all sorts of wires around to fit it.
Has a little remote for turning the alarm off and on and for the settings for the alarm. And has a little flashing light to show you the alarm is on.for a 100 bucks i think it was a good deal.but if some one wants your bike bad enough their going to get it.I live in cali and i cant shoot some one for trying to steal my bike like other places in the states lol.But i do have a 90lb pitbull and an English bull terrier i dont mind setting on them.

if you have the stock hd alarm with the add on siren, then it doesn't matter if they disconnect the battery cable or not. the siren has its own battery backup for just that reason.
