New to the forum so this subject may have been discussed to death but I haven't been able to search it successfully.
Just bought an 08 FLHTP and it has no stock or aftermarket security. My last Heritage had the HD security and whether it worked or not it had a 'feel good' aspect to it when on. Any advise on if it is worth putting in HD security or aftermarket systems?
Brian
The hands fee system from HD is great. I really like mine. Mine has the chirping too which I like also. Another bonus is it should give you a discount on your insurance.
I just ordered mine from HD. I get nervous leaving it parked. It's not gonna stop a true thief but may discourage an idiot. Also got the pager option so if someone screws with the bike I'll get a beep. Plus 10% discount from Geico will pay for system in a year.
Security is just something else that can cause a "no start" situation in the middle of nowhere. I would rather lock the forks and the ignition switch that trust the electrical system.
I've had the HD security system w/smart siren and pager on my last 2 bikes. Like stated, it should give you a discount on insurance. You can set the system to not chirp (kind of annoying). I like the pager feature when traveling. When leaving the bike out overnight (motel) I sleep better having the pager on on the night table next to me. The systems were plug and play and super EZ to install.
The biggest drawback I have read about with other bikers problems with the HD alarm relates to their inability to read the instructions! The alarm comes pre loaded with a security code that you are instructed to retreive and change. IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS this step would save you the PITA crap you gotta go thru if your fob battery dies or you loose it. There is an instruction card in the owners manual that SHOULD BE PUT IN YOUR WALLET for putting in your code manually in that scenario.

Security system or locked forks will not even slow down bike thieves...they pull up in a van...a few big guys pick bike up the bike, and put in the van...20 seconds and they are gone...make sure your insurance covers extras on your bike is a better plan.
