Wow at the school I work at everyone thinks it is great that I ride to work. In fact a few others are starting to take a MSF class this spring so they will be able to ride in. I think they are missing the fact that the kids think it is great that you ride and in turn helps you teach them better.

In this day and age though no one needs to be with out a job.

Yes, they are most likely out of line and don't have a leg to stand on.
They also control your salary, to a degree your teacher ratings/evaluations, etc. and consequently can hurt you in more subtle ways.
Your choices seem pretty clear, comply, try to reason with them, Leave.
Faced with the same situation years ago, I fought and paid a high price for it, then ended up leaving a position that I loved because it became a never healing scab.
Plain fact of life that most games are rigged to favor those in power. It's the way that our society has evolved at all levels.
Choose your battles and fight the ones that are worth it to you. Almost impossible to fight them all.
I teach school in San Angelo, and cant imagine even having that conversation. Means of transportation is just what it is....who cares??!! The only thing you might be showing kids is how to conserve fuel?
That being said, it would probably be frowned upon if I wore a Harley shirt to work instead of regular attire.
