I also use this method to get the glue off the air cleaner cover after pealing off that ugly label that's on the top of it. There's always a glue residue that is really tough to get off. Comet, water and a scrubby pad work well and doesn't scratch.
I don't know of a non-abrasive Comet but Bar Keeper's Friend is non-abrasive. No way I would use any kind of Comet or a 3M pad on my chrome.

I use acetone on a cotton rag when exhaust is cold.

Yes. Or just ride it until it's good and hot again. It usually wipes off with a soft, damp rag.

I use a copper scrubbing pad and can't tell it was every touched!

I used a Brillo pad, sprayed the pad with oven cleaner. Then rubbed the marks right off.

Or, if you don't wanna wait, spray on WD40 and use a razor blade. No, it won't scratch your pipes as long as you don't muscle it - - let the blade do the work ....
