Default Last Rides

This guy was riding in Waterbury VT the day before yesterday. The officer who pulled him over is also a biker. He asked why the ride on such a wintery day. The bikers response was that he has terminal cancer and these will be his last rides. God Speed! Many folks on the local Harley Dealers facebook page had a ton of negative criticism of the biker but more so of the cop that let him ride on. The officer ended up responding after seeing the hate posts. There ended up being a lot of folks who know this kind hearted man and his plight but kept it to themselves until now! See the officers own posts below! May God Bless!

Default The Officers own words

Tobi Bernier As the "Copper" that stopped this gentleman on the motorcycle, let me tell you what happened to set the story straight. First, I received a report of erratic operation of a motorcycle rider on interstate 89 north from my dispatch. I double checked to make sure that what I heard was right and didn't need too much reaffirmation as the motorcycle pulled out in front of me (safely). Due to the nature of the report I am obligated to stop the motorcycle to check the welfare of the operator and to address the complaint at hand. Some of these complaints require a ticket to be issued and some don't (that's another issue too long to explain on this post). While I was speaking to the operator, he identified himself, was pleasant and when I asked him why the need for the wintery ride, he explained to me something I never expected to hear. He advised that he was terminal cancer patient and wanted to ride until the good lord decieded to take him. He also advised that he made sure to be cautious of the traffic laws and other operators considerations, and from what I had seen that proved to be mostly true. I praised him for his strength and intestinal fortitude for the ride and sent him on his way. Now let me explain who I am a bit... I have been a "COP" for eleven years and ride my own motorcycle every summer (someday a harley) for the same amount of time.

January 1 at 11:56am ˇ 14..

Tobi Bernier I admire his stregnth to fight cancer, ride unrelentlessly through a blizzard and wear a smile when the police ask him why and do it all at the same time. All of you haters could learn something from this man... Humble, human, and determined to live his life knowing it will end sooner than later. Your comments don't bother me and never will. I don't wear your chips on my shoulders I wear your safety and security instead, no matter what you say and praise your search for truth even when not asking for it outright. Take care folks and when we cross paths on two wheels I wave to let you know I am here and to show you I am part of the quiet brotherhood of riders. Be safe, ride safe and live your life. Take care and God bless.

Default No Harm - No Foul

Sounds to me like everyone was doing what they were supposed to and needed to. The police are not our enemy! I feel badly for the biker with his plight, but at the same time envy him for his fortitude. The police officer was just doing his job! He exercised his judgement, I believe justly, summed up his decision and got back to doing what he gets paid for.

These two people are, IMHO, what this world needs more of.

I think the Officer is a stand up guy and did the right thing. I was however, blown away by all of the negativety some others showed on the Face Book post. To some it seems easy to criticize someone, without ever having the opportunity to walk awhile in the other persons shoes!

First, my heart goes out to the biker. And for having the courage to ride in such harsh conditions. I don't know if I could.

Second, the cop did his job. The biker wasn't doing anything wrong and was left go.

End of story.

I agree and thought it was a story of perseverance, a good cop and just how much a part of our lives our bikes are to so many of us! Thats why I thought I'd post it! Its not something you see every day in January in Vermont and the story touched me!

I really don't really have much to say or add other than I agree 100% with what you guys have said.

The cop did what he had to do and made his decision. I doubt that the guy on the bike was breaking any laws and I admire him for his strength and fortitude! Both of them are stand up guys from what I see and hear.

Thumbs up

When I worked at Kansas City Airport for a time, I didn't own a car for several years. I was exiting the highway to take the bridge to the airport in a sleet/snow/ice storm, was on the off-ramp, the bike slid out from under me, and I slid down the cloverleaf in a perfect arc, coming to rest at the bottom.

Suddenly, cop lights behing me! A State Trooper happened to be following me down the ramp.

I thought he might chew me out, but he helped me right the bike, made sure I was okay, asked where I was going. I told him to work at the airport.

He said, "I'm gonna' leave my overheads on, clear a lane of snow with my tires, take it real slow, you follow behind me in my tire tracks, and I'll get you to the hangar"

He did just that. I met him the next weekend at his "Cop" bar, and bought him a couple beers.

God Bless our Brother Biker who has the spirit and fortitude to continue his riding at a time when his spirit must be at it's lowest.

We all know the recuperative power of riding our bikes, letting problems go by the boards as we hang our faces in the wind.

Bless the Officer too who let our Brother on his way.....
