Successful Roadside Repairs
I took out one of my vintage Suzuki's last summer, a 1973 Suzuki GT250K, twin cylinder, 2 stroke, street bike. I wound up about 15 miles from home with the bike running like it had fouled one of the plugs, but it also smelled like fuel.
I looked down and found one of the fuel lines split at the petcock, spilling fuel on the engine and the pipes. I killed the engine (suction petcock) so it wouldn't draw any more fuel and figured I'd just call my son to come get me with his trailer. Nope, he's working. Ok I'll call my wife, have her get the ramps and my truck and I'm good to go. Nope, she's in BFE shoppin. Ok, I'll call my daughter to come get me, run me by an auto parts store, grab the fuel line and go back and fix the bike. No answer.
So I'm sittin by the side of the road thinking and then it came to me. I took off the side cover and there it was, in all it's retro you don't have this on newer bikes glory, THE BATTERY VENT HOSE
I cut a section off of it, replaced the fuel line, fired the bike up and rolled on outta there. I had been on my way to the Suzuki dealer to order some parts so I continued on my way there. It was a warm day so the Service Department garage door was open and they heard that little two lung screamer coming up the access road, they were all standing outside when I pulled up.I got off the bike, pulled my helmet off and said "I bought this bike brand new here and got the extended warranty. I just had a fuel line break and I want a man on this RIGHT NOW!". They all broke out laughing and after looking at the bike for some time, they replaced the fuel lines and battery vent hose for nuthin
