I like the looks and feel of the Super, but would have to have forward controls. But what would hold me back is the 96. Also...look at the 103 Street Bob.
Stand back and look at both...from all sides.
Note the subtle design differences...up front, rear fender, etc.
I can tell you what works for me (look at bike in my sig)....and others here can tell you what works for them...but...
Which one do YOU like best? It's gonna be your bike.
When I was looking for a used Wide Glide for my son, who has never ridden, the salesman told me a Superglide would be an easier newbie bike because of mid controls versus front controls. Makes sense to me.
I prefer the fuller fender look of the Super Glide than the chopped fender look of the Wide Glide. I believe the difference between the 96" and the 103" isn't really all that great in day-to-day riding. I also prefer mid pegs over forwards. Oh, don't forget that $1800 savings over the Wide Glide buys a few mods.
All that said, it's your choice. Get the one that speaks to you the most. It's hard to believe you'll be disappointed in either one.

or he could have told you to get a lightwieght inexpensive standard or d.s. for a few months to learn how to really ride. i know i'll catch flack for this but i firmly believe that nearly all who start on a big heavy bike never "really" learn how to handle a bike. they may get by for years or forever, they may think they know how but... most of the time they don't.
I was torn between the two also and ended up buying the anniversary edition of the Superglide custom. For me it was all the chrome that is already on the bike vs the blacked out look. I ended up putting forward controls on it, a Stage 1 upgrade and 4" pullback risers. The 96 with Stage 1 has more than enough power for me but then again I am an old phart.
Test ride them. The dealer let me test ride the WG, SG, and Switchback before I decided on the SG last August. My price range kept me in the Dyna family.
IMO, the WG looks the coolest of the Dynas. I give it the thumbs up in the looks department. I inititally had my eyes on it for this reason. But I preferred the ride of the SG over the WG. It was easier to handle and perform u-turns and such at lower speeds. All-around, it was more nimble and easier to ride. The WG was more peppy. Even though the difference between 103 and 96 is not that large, I did notice the difference in power. Not Earth-shattering but the WG did have more spunk to it. I also wanted to add things like an engine guard with fog lights mounted and a sissy bar rack and such and the SG looks less silly with that stuff on it.
As far as forward vs mid controls, I have the mids and the highway pegs mounted on the frame, not the guard. I can easily operate the break and shift lever from the highway pegs using my heels. It is good to be able to switch back and forth and stretch on long rides.

I agree the stock 103 vs the stock 96 = not much of a difference. Get the Super Glide and get an aftermarket 103 kit and you'll have something. Don't care for the newer version of the Wide Glide, liked the the older version much better. The Super Glide is the best looking of the Dyna's.
