Default emissions testing in Japan

Can anyone help me? I brought my 2012 soft tail Slim to Japan when I got stationed here and it is a complete money pit to license. I am looking for the emissions standards HD must meet to sell bikes in USA to compare them to Japanese standards before I spend the 4000 bucks to swap lights, speedo, insurance, fees etc. The test is 950 bucks and you get one retest before you pay again. Any help making this less painful is appreciated.

There is a recent thread I saw on this same subject. Do a forum search.

Looking at shipping it home and storing it then buy local for my three year stay. If anyone out there is heading to japan and want to bring your late model Harley, dont, buy a pre 1999 and you will have little trouble licensing it here. thanks for the help

Where you stationed?
For a cost of 4K, I'm guessing you aren't close to one of the testing facilities and a big part is for the transportation to get it there (and back) and paying folks to handle it at that end.

Only light that needs to be changed is the headlight.
front turn signals - put tape over the running light contact

If you can't find a cheap speedo with KPH you can put a clear decal with the numbers over the one you have. Have also seen folks use numbers on little pieces of paper that were taped to the speedo.

Going to also need a sticker on the tranny that shows the shift pattern.

Stock mufflers with the 'E' stamp. Might need to stuff them with steel wool to meet the decibel requirement.

Need a couple papers from the moco - brake cert and one that deals with HP. The one for HP ain't quite what GOJ is looking for but I've heard it can be tweaked.

Trmac, Im in Atsugi. Harley guy here told me the head light was the same as the blackline on his floor. Im assuming you had to change yours, what was different about it. The lights that are giving me trouble are the tail lights, both brake and turn signals one unit with a red lens. I need an amber lens, HD Japan quote 1600 USD for amber LED tail lights, so i will look on line for some amber lenses. The stickers i can get made, thanks for the heads up on the tranny sticker, didnt know about that one. There is a Japanese local who will take 2000 bucks plus parts and do it for you but his reputation here is not good. I have stock pipes on it, so I am wondering if it will pass emissions and if I should put the power commander on before i try the emissions test.

If you are at Atsugi get hold of these guys http://www.motofoot.co.jp/ they are fairly close and deal with alot of military guys bikes, I know they have also been involved with some for compliance here. The owner speaks english too so that'll help you.

2K plus parts - hope that includes the testing fee too. If he ain't got a good rep then probably best to stay away. Check with the guy Tanuki listed and see what they can do for you.

We got a guy here in Okinawa that charges $3500 or less the last I heard - that is for his work, the guys on the other end, test fee, transportation to mainland and back plus doing all the paperwork with GOJ for you. If you need some parts swapped and can't get them he can usually come up with what is needed to pass - he's slowly building up a supply for this purpose. If he can't get it to pass he gives full refund - don't think he's had to do that yet. The process from down here can take 3 or 4 months. We got some local bike shops that have done it but they take just as long and cost more.

With the headlight it was about what angle it points - stock US went right and stock Japan goes left. My bike came through AAFES when they could still do local delivery so they handled swapping the parts. I've heard some of the newer ones have some kind of flat beam so maybe you're ok on that.

Don't buy parts from HD Japan unless you absolutely have to - They charge at least 2 to 3 times more than US prices on parts. Try ebay or there's lots of US dealerships that ship to FPO that are always running discounts and free shipping.

You probably want the PC so it can be tweaked to pass. Emissions is one of the reasons/problems that AAFES had that resulted in them stopping the local delivery program.
