I guess I'm not much of a "Vintage collector", I couldn't imagine paying almost $900 for a hat, and a used one at that, lol. I wonder what the reserve is.

awful lot of speculation and 'estimated' going on in that ad...

anyone can buy a hat and some pins off ebay, put them together, and make up a back story.

It's interesting to read the comments. Unless the hat was actually yours or a direct family member you could trace it would be impossible to date. I like searching the web for old, unique and collectable items myself as well as watching programs like American Pickers and Pawn Stars. To me it is a good education process besides learning interesting things about our history. Like said in one of the posts it all comes down to what someone is willing to pay.

Based on what I see with this hat and pins and the little research I've done it could easily be over 60 years old. Even if someone did put it all together it still would not change the fact that it is old, rare, very unique and in my opinion collectable.

Here is a link to a website I frequent often that always has rare hard to find items. Two of the pins shown on this guys hat on ebay are for sale here for pretty good numbers. I think it is fair to say that all the pins would average $100.00 each or more x 18 for $1800.00. Then figure at least $350.00 for the hat based on those I've seen over the years and it could add up pretty quickly.

I have to agree with you. For several years I bought and sold Harley related memorabilia and collectables. In fact I sold a few things to the website that you referenced in your post. Although the market has gone soft, some items will still bring surprisingly high prices if you can find the right person.

I don't know if they are still in demand but I made a killing on a set of the early Christmas plates. I think it was like the first six issues or so. On the plates released after that, the price dropped considerably but those first few years were highly sought after.

Im not too sure you could not make one of those hats and say it's old like that.
$890.00? I don't think so.

That would probably cost more than buying the real thing! Not to mention the time involved to do it.

The hat may be worth $350.00 or so, but the pins are where the real money is.

How do you duplicate 18 pins that date back to 1940?

Have you priced a captains hat? The real thing sells for $150 and up. There is a guy on ebay that makes these type hats and if I remember right they are $200 to $250. Add it all up and you will have a heck of a lot more than $890.00 if you set out to duplicate this in my opinion. I expect to see this hat with pins go for a lot more than the current bid.

Can't be real. Doesn't say "Made in China" on it.

I have a hat that belonged to the late George "Rip" Rose (Riding with Rip-Easyriders) and signed by Willie G. while on one of his journalistic trips.

I also have a metal badge made in the 50's similar to the cloth one on that ebay hat's front that say's "13 Hell On Wheels"

The person selling that one should have it appraised, donate it to a motorcycle museum, and write it off on their taxes.

Thumbs down

Think of the good things someone could do with that money. What a waste.
Some have more money than sense.
