A couple of weeks ago, I took mine in for some work.
Not thinking (nothing out of the ordinary for me) I stopped and topped it off about 1/2 mile from the shop. I was going to wait for it and knew I wouldn't feel like getting gas after they were done with it.
The tank had to come off and I knew it had to come off but as I said, I wasn't thinking. The parts manager came and found me and said "the guy working on your bike wants to talk to you".
He was not happy to say the least. I totally top off every time I get gas as I'm usually going at least 30 or 40 miles. It was full up to the brim. I applolgized and told him to just leave me enough to get back over to the gas station and put the rest in whatever he was driving/riding that day.
As a recovering "topper" I can tell you that gas will spew out all over on a hot day. It will even run out of the filler if you leave the cap off for about a minute. I've haven't checked the volume expansion of gasoline lately but it expands a good 5 percent.
The only way I can get away with it most times is to screw the cap on and start and ride immediately. My buddies laugh at me all the time, but i guess it comes from wanting to squeeze some more miles out to the next gas stop.
I fill up into the insert but I always fill up before a ride not right before I go home. So I am using the gas almost immediately. I have never had the problem mentioned by the OP. One poster mentioned the nozzle not shuting of and getting gas anywhere. I never use the clip to hold the trigger in place. I always hold the nozzle just inside the insert and keep an eye on it the whole time I am filling up.
I'm a topper. 2 times in the last month I have had gas pouring out from the cap - never happened before. Seems odd to me this has never happened before and then 2 times in a month. I actually think I was screwing my cap down too tight impacting the pressure in some way. Who knows.

How many clicks did you give the cap after filling up? (oops, wrong thread, sorry)
I don't fill my tank clear up to the insert (or whatever it's called). I put the hose nozzle about an inch through the insert and when it shuts off that's all the gas I put in. We have really hot summer days here and I've not had any gas leaking out after fill ups.

I used to do this, until one Saturday morning when I put the pump in the tank, turned it on and started doing something else, about a minute later gas started spewing out the top of the tank like a fountain, all over the bike and ground, etc.
It was a freaking mess and it sucked big time.............I don't trust the pump to auto shut-off anymore.
Since I run ethanol-free, I buy it in 2 or 5 gallon containers & almost always fill my bike with a gas can & funnel. And I never top it off; just enough for the ride I'm gonna take.
