Default Over filled gas?

So today I had the bike on the side stand and filled up. Filled to the bottom of the insert. Screwed cap on and rode about a mile home and put bike in garage. A short time ago this evening I went to the garage and smelled gas. There were a couple of drops under the bike. A closer look I found it was gas coming from the vent tube. Oops, I never had this happen before, but then again, I never filled and just parked it. I usually ride a ways. Anyone else done this?

I usually fill mine with the nozzle spring resting on the rim of the tank. It leaves about an inch gap. Sometimes I'll pull the nozzle out some and add a little more but none has ever came out. Not yet.

I had a nozzel not shut off last summer and dump gas all over the tank and down the side of the bike. I can tell you it is uncomfortable to watch spilled gasoline boil off the side of your engine. Once it appereared dry, I rode home and washed the bike. No harm done.

My guess is it was cooler when you filled and warmed up. The gas expanded and dripped out. No big deal unless you have an open flame source near by.

On my 2000 softail when I would fill up to the bottom of the insert and then stand the bike up straight to leave the station, gas would pour out of the vent tube underneath, enough to leave a small puddle 4-5 inches round.
I learned very quickly to not fill it up that high, not so much for the small loss of gas, but because it really made the tire slippery when I didn't realize it and rode right through it.

Overall, it wasn't an issue once I learned where to fill it up to, the gauge still showed as full after filling up and I didn't leave a spot at the station anymore.

Had a buddy do the same thing except we were meeting for breakfast at the time. Filled up right next to the restaurant. As we were leaving we rand into a friend so we ended up bsing in the parking lot for a bit. All the while his bike was baking in the sun. When we pulled out i noticed a rather large puddle where his bike was parked and looked at his bike as it was still dripping gas everywhere. Needless to say, he doesn't top it off like that anymore. There really was a lot os gas coming out of that thing.

I don't fill my tank clear up to the insert (or whatever it's called). I put the hose nozzle about an inch through the insert and when it shuts off that's all the gas I put in. We have really hot summer days here and I've not had any gas leaking out after fill ups.

Yep, that's pretty much what happened. So next time if I fill up and ride one block home and park, I'll leave it below the insert.
