I'm buying my first Harley and I'm new to forums, so forgive me for any mistakes. Looking for advice from owners that have experience with bikes a few years old. Eyeing a 2001 Road King Custom with absolutely everything on it (chromed out, only 12K mi., chrome wheels ($2200 worth). Mint condition. I also like the Street Bob. Any advice on this year model (maintenance woes, etc.) or whether or not the Bob is the way to go. I am biking for fun, not for travel. No long trips, etc. Both are about the same $ (14,500), but I'll have to dump a few $ into the Bob (pipes, forward controls, etc). TheRoad King needsnothing.New Bob or very nice '01 Road King. Thanks for the advice.
NADA on a 2001 Roadking is about 12,500 high book. The wheels and add ons are only good if they are what you want. The dealer will give you nothing extra for them if you trade a bike in.
If you are patient and look around, you can do better. Don't know how you can really compare a Bob to the King, totally different bikes. You say it's for only around town, but what if you change your mind want to go on that long run, then the King is the way to go. You can almost buy a new bike, why not wait and get a new one. There are plenty of 06 bikes out there that they can't sell, check different dealers and look for rebates. With the new 07s out, everyone wants the 6 speed tranny and 96 inch motor over the older TC 88. There are plenty of 06s sitting out there at a discount price. Check the web and search dealers, I know they have $2500 rebates out there on the 06s, you just have to find them.
Both are nice bikes. But I have heard two different guys with Road Kings say that if they had to do it over, they'd buy a Street Glide. And then I know a guy with a Street Glide who's saving for a TourPak.
Since I know about twice as many people with RKs thanSGs, I'd say it's a wash.....
