well i'm 25 and if my dad passed a bike down to me, it would mean more then if i just went out and bought one from some random person. I go through bikes like crazy and that would be one that i would actually hang on to.

now buying it from dad or getting it for free, it would mean about the same

I think most if not everyone knows their kids. If I were to be honest with myself, of the two kids I have...my eldest fits the description given of not appreciating things handed to her....the other one I would definitely give her a bike and know it would be appreciated and taken well care of.

I don't have any kids but I have two nephews who both ride. At this time I have no plans on selling the bikes I have any time soon. All are paid for and I hope to keep them in very good condition for a long time. At some point though, I would feel very comfortable passing them down to my nephews. My youngest nephew is old school and won't ride metrics, so he'll get my softail. My oldest nephew likes sport bikes and he'll get the Kawasaki Z1000. I have a special attachment to my Dyna and I want to keep that, then perhaps give a nice vintage bike one of my nephews son's or daughter's (assuming they have kids), when I'm old and gray and can't ride any more.

I trust that both my nephews will greatly respect the bikes and appreciate the sentimental value they have.

I have asked my dad for his bike when he passes and he said it is mine. My dad is pushing 80.

My oldest son has already asked me for my bike after I pass. I told him it was his.
The second son will get most of the guns. (they will be worth far more than the bike)
Third son, the family jewelry, watches, etc.

After that, they can divide everything up equally. (there will be a family farmstead involved, I hope they find a way to keep it together for another generation)

Giving a bike to a young man/women is a very slippery slope. I agree with Twizt that they should somehow earn the bike, and I really like what Nscoyote says about letting them help build the bike. I would only add that giving a young man a Harley can really mess with some peoples heads.

If you give a youth a bike are you responsible for the outcome? I would have, and would have accepted the risk that came along with it, but there would have been a very short leash, and he would have helped pay for some parts, and he would have had enough busted knuckles and sore knees from wrenching to appreciate the bike. His first year of riding would have been with me and his brothers only to learn some respect for the road.

RIP Nic.

My kids are aware of my feelings for riding since they've lived with it all their lives. They're grown now, all but one of 'em married, and doing fairly well in their chosen fields. I won't think twice about giving my bikes to any of them. I know they'd appreciate the gesture and take damn good care of them.
My grandkids? That's another story...they still need to learn the value of a buck.
So, I think it matters, to some degree, how old and how responsible your kids are.

My son isn't interested in any of my bikes .. He is however very interested in a 55 Chevy pickup I've been slowly turning into a hot rod ... he helps me out when he can and I told him that as long as he helps out and treats the truck right... he will get the truck. He seems to dig that thought lol

My son is 23 and saving money to buy my old Honda. I believe he will take better care of it if he earns it.

Out of 5 kids, I have given 4 of them my bikes. The 5th does not ride except with her husband.
