I have a new 2012 Fatboy lo. My question is, should I have it tuned after about 1000 miles? Right now I'm getting about 32 mpg in town. I still have to find out how it does on the highway for mpg.
Tuned...as in dyno'ed? To be truly effective (given the cost of a dyno tune) you would probably want to have a tuner (TTS or Sert or ????) and maybe even go stage 1 (hi flow air intake and new head pipes and exhaust) to get your money's worth out of it.
The alternative is them using a "canned" HD map or something similar and I don't know that you really get that much out of those. Are you concerned about gas mileage????

Yea, I want to get better gas mileage. The bike is stock.
Well...what HD quotes insofar as MPG is probably optimistic. I think if you hit their website they will say something to the effect of their MPG rating is under ideal lab conditions or some such jibberish. 32-37 around town is probably in the ballpark of reality. Expect maybe 39-41 on the freeway and riding it like you were on cruise control.
I bought a 2012 fatboy lo in August. traded for a SG in December. but all i changed on mine was the slip-ons. went with the V&H Slash cut slip-ons. mine never got below 36mpg. got as high as 44mpg on one trip. easily averaged 40 for everyday driving. but my commute does include 9 miles of highway into town.
Not for sure why yours is getting so low of a mpg unless you are having lots of fun twisting the throttle. which i would understand.
by the way, most of the numbers i gave above were 2 up riding. especially the road trips.
And for your service as well. MPG is driven by a lot of factors....on road trips I have done I get wonderful mileage when I am riding in a place like Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa or another geography where it's flat and the roads are straight. Get into someplace with a lot of grades and curves (lots in north Georgia where I do a lot of riding) and the mpg isn't anywhere near what I get on a flat and straight piece of roadway with a steady throttle.
I have a 97 Saturn SL with manual transmission. It get's 38 MPG in town and 44 MPG highway. Harley's are not very fuel efficient for their size, etc. And if you have it tuned, stage I or stage IV or what ever, well your one of the few who worries about fuel economy on your bike. I bought mine for fun and it's sure cheaper to run than my airplane, lol.
