I have used clear spray paint, from Walmart for years, never a problem.
I've used the grip tape for golf clubs, works really well, you won't save the grip if you have to remove it though.
Mostly I use the Honda grip glue that I have for my dirt bike grips. Spray some parts cleaner on it right before you slide the grip on, so the grip goes on easily. The parts cleaner evaporates in a few minutes and your grip is glued on tight.
