When I toured the York assembly plant, the bikes were fully complete when they were checked on the dynometer as the operator took the vehicle through all the gears & to a speed of 84 MPH. They did not show how they went into the box.

Years ago I picked up motorcycles for a dealer/friend . Yes they come in a crate but the shop boy can put one road ready in 30 minutes or less . 600 buck is way high and a money maker for the dealer .

Thanks guys for all the info! I'm looking to buy a 2013 Fat Bob what do you guys think would be a realistic OTD price. MSRP is$15,899.00

But the dealer has it listed as a starting price of $18,899.00 where they got that number before fees I don't know?

There are dealers that sell for "over" MSRP.
There is no law against it, and only supply and demand come into play in how they determine what they price their bikes at.

If you have more than one dealer in an area, you usually find better deals.
Not sure how many HD dealers you have access too though.

It all boils down to how bad they want to sell a bike.
If they have plenty of people paying a higher price, the dealer has no incentive to lower his prices.
If he prices too high and everyone goes to the dealer next door to buy, then he has no choice but to lower his prices.
But in your location, he may not need too.

There's about 7 dealers here in Hawaii. But I guess my question wasn't clear earlier?
I know a dealer can ask for what ever price he wants. But My question is when would he start to loose money? I'm all for supporting local businesses, and I understand that they need to make a profit.
But I just don't wanna be paying the salesman entire mortgage on my purchase.

I recently bought my bike and did not pay any of these fees. living in Hawaii you probably will have to pay what they want. I have 4 dealers within 60 miles, so they didn't ask for extra money and I paid a little below msrp.

Heres a pic of a factory crated bike:

The bikes are ratchet-strapped to a steel and aluminum rail base. The handlebars are detached and lay flat across the fuel tank. The windshield is removed and placed in a cardboard box and rides on the seat.

There are stanchions that are then attached to the base rail that create a cage completely around the bike. The stanchions also act as a support for a thick cardboard skin which also serves to protect the contents of the crate.

Awesome that's exactly how I was thinking they came. That's how my KTM arrived.

What do you guys thing about this?

O.K. I was able to find the invoice for a 2013 Fat Bob. It's dealers cost of $12,399.00 (MSRP is $15,499.00)
So considering that they charge $800 for destination fee, (I live on a rock in the middle of the pacific)
$12,399 + $800 s/h + $400 for color upgrade =$13,600.00 dealers cost.

Now if I include Lic. and assembly fee about $600 (which is sort of crazy high IMHO)

Which bring it to $14,200.00 +tax = $14,870.00

Would $16,000.00 OTD seem fair?? That would be a $1,200.00 profit for the dealer?

Or would that be crazy?
