Good to know about the noise and that you get used to it. Didn't bother me so much as made me worry it was going to fall apart. "Pissed off sewing machine" describes it to a tee ha! As long as its not actually breaking, I can deal with it.
That's some impressive distance lh4x4. Proof they can do it all. Getting more attractive all the time....
I'm out of the loop with these new bikes............here i thought you rented a 1972 harley when i read the thread title. I thought..This will be a intresting read...........not that it wasn't
So did I, lol. I was getting ready to chime in I owned a '72 EG.
Thanks for all the insight guys. I thought the small tank would bug me, but stopping every 90 miles on a pleasant tour should be manageable. I'd probably carry an extra fuel bottle for emergency back up in case I over-estimate.
Gave up my street bob for a sporty, i love it, the 72 is the best looking stock bike to come out in my opinion. A brother of mine just picked one up and by far the seat and exhaust have to go but we do a lot of long hauls aside from having to stop every 80 miles for him to get gas (i have a 3.3 gallon peanut on mine can get about 100 highway miles before reserve) he loves it.

The Evo engine is basically bullet proof. Probably the most reliable engine Harley has ever made.

90 miles? I have a 48 with the same sized 2.1 tank and I'd be walking to a gas station before 90 miles!
Seriously, the Sportsters are a great bike. 5 gears, noisy and fun to ride.

I've always liked Evos. Have a different feel to them.

My reserve light came on at 70, when I filled up at 75 it only took 1.5 gallons so I'm assuming I could make it to 90 miles. Might have been some downhill grades helping me out. Also, bike was stock, if you have a stage 1 it cuts into your mpg a bit.

Street bob for a sporty is very close to where I'm coming from with my Fatbob. Street bob and 72 are almost kissing cousins style wise. What tipped it for you? I agree the 72 is beautiful right off the showroom floor. Still trying to get my FB right.

Just remember, you'd be moving down to the girly bike of the HD family. That is until you walk off and leave the BT's at a red light.
I saw a cool 72 this past weekend, where the only mods were a set of lowered struts and the front fender removed. Changed the entire look of the bike for little or no money.
