OK IA, I have some questions. I had always assumed that at a checkpoint each rider was given their next checkpoint.
If that were the case, I would assume most would follow the same route to the next checkpoint. Yet, looking at the map, the riders are following several different routes.
Why is that?
(nevermind, I see they are following the same route, just a few are way out front)
Rider 168, does he go by the handle Rude Jeff?
When they get to a checkpoint, they get the route to the next checkpoint. The checkpoints are the Harley Dealers on the map depicted by the Bar and shields.
I got a text this morning advising the riders of a detour so you may see some going all different directions if they all didn't get the detour text or hadn't read it by the time they reached the area of the problem.

Yes, 168 is Rude Jeff.
I have met him down here in south Florida.
I've also had some beers with Helmet.

He (Rude Jeff) decided to do the Hoka Hey this year just a week or so ago. He was planning an attempt to break the record for Key West to Prudhoe Bay Alaska next month. I don't know if he still plans on doing it or not. I think he said the current record is around 89 hours.
IA,
What do the instructions/directions look like that they give you?
What is it that keeps riders off interstates and from taking the most direct routes?

PM me an email address and I'll send you the directions to this years first checkpoint. I originally put it up in this thread but was asked by the person that sent them to me to not put them on the internet until the Challenge is over so I deleted them. Honor and the fact that the HHC can see your entire ride via the GPS logs is what stops most from "jumping" the route.
Another rider went down. She is an HHC Vet having ridden in three of the four Challenges (she was recovering from heart surgery during the 2012 Challenge). For anyone that might do business with the Harley Dealership in Clovis NM it is Carla, one of the Motorclothes gals there.
Last I heard she was in intensive care. I know nothing beyond that right now. She is a pretty tough woman and we are all confidant she will come out of this OK.
The first four have made it to the finish. It is my understanding that only the first four will share in the money. One of them is Rude Jeff.
I hate to hear of any rider going down, but with that many bikes, accidents happen and you always have the risk of a rider pushing too far. I hope she is fine.
I had kept track of the race and saw where Rude Jeff finished yesterday. I was wondering how many they paid, thanks for answering.
I read the directions. Damn are they tedious. I can sit on a bike and cover more miles than most, but the route, with its twists and turns they give you is brutal to keep up with. Especially once exhaustion hits. My hats off to them.
I put the HHMC on my bucket list but it is after a couple of rides that are already there.

another rider went down? seems like there have also been a few fatalities thru the years. i can see the attraction of doing this, but at age 65 not sure the old body is up to it.
why not set this thing up like a golf course...different tees for different skill levels. have a senior, regular, championship/highly skilled, and ladies division. probably get a lot more players if there were more chances to win.
