First things first. Ingloriousbasterd my user name is actually a nickname given to me while in the military. I was the first Mexican a lot of my friends in the military had ever met who didn't speak Spanish, so came the name mexicant. Also there is a quote in one of my favorite movies of all time called once upon a time in mexico that also refers to the mexicant nickname.
Now to the real reason I am here. Thank all of you for your responses and insight. One of the good things about forums like this is you get lots of different view points from people with lots of different visions or styles which I really like. The argument about not being able to find a HD for under 10k that wont have a ton of miles or be really beaten up I couldn't disagree with more. As for what bikes I think may work or not. I am 6' 220lbs and my wife is 5'6" 130lbs. I think the sportsters would be a bit small for me so im going to stay away from those. The vrods are nice looking bikes but the wife and I agree they just don't have that classic HD look to them and somewhat remind me of the buells I used to see a lot of while stationed in California. I'm actually really falling in love with the simplicity and stance of the Fatboys. Ive seen lots of bikes with simple mods that make it look a little more sporty. Does anyone here ride two up on Fatboys and if so how do the significant others like riding on it? Also is there any year Fatboys to stay away from because of flaws or are they all pretty much the same with a few newer things here and there?
Agreed, don't rule out the Sportster if you and your wife are "less than large" people. My wife and I are about the same size as Barebones and his girl (me at 6' 190 and her at 5'1 130) and I can confirm that a Sporty will handle 2-up just fine so long as you're not looking to cross the country or anything....
Better yet, if you shop around a bit, 10K can get you 2 Sportsters. Get your girl into a MSF class if she doesn't ride, and don't even bother with 2-up.
Mexicant, the myth that you cannot get a decent bike under 10k is just that - a myth. I shopped around for a while and although it took me seemingly a long time to find what i wanted, i paid less than $8500 for a 2006 EG (FLHTPI) with 21xxx k miles and with a few goodies tossed in by PO. Just figure out what model you want and then look high and low for a good deal; they are out there.
I know in OKC if you look around enough $10K will net you a pretty nice bike. I would think the Fatboy would be a nice place to start. Best of luck with your search.
For the "classic" look you mention try the, Deluxe, Softtail or CrossBones. But I agree, ride some first. People mention the RK, but I rode one in a test ride and I knew across the parking lot that it was not for me... I got and love my CrossBones...We did do a little 2 up on it but then the wife got a Deluxe so we ride solo now.
Hey guys/girls, new member here on the forums. My wife and I were referred to this forum by a friend who has nothing but good things to say about everyone on here. Anyway the reason I signed up is we are looking to buy a Harley and both of us are new to the Harley world. I grew up riding crotch rockets and needles to say after getting married and having a couple kids the wife an I would really just like a different bike to hop on and just go for a cruise. One problem though, I don't know what models would fit us best. We are looking for something comfortable for both of us obviously but would still like something sportier and possibly something with a wider frame/tank. I really like the street glides but as of right now that's just a bit out of our budget as we would like to stay below $10,000 for right now. I know I have seen wider stanced Harleys before that literally almost broke my neck when I turned to look at them but unfortunately I couldn't tell you what models or year ranges they were. Anyway if you guys/girls could help us out we would really appreciate it and I look forward to any input you can offer to help us with our search.
Did YOU compromise when you married your wife??? Then don't compromise on your bike, especially if you are going 2-up... Go for the Ultra Classic/Limited...
