Default Primary Gasket

Hey guys I'm getting ready to crack one and go out and change the outer shifter shaft seal on the low rider its seeping pretty good, any of you that has changed the primary gasket did you put any sealer on it. It is soft metal with a thin foam on it. The folks at the dealer said it didn't need it. It's up in the air. what you do you all think. mid controls

Oh yeah 5.99 for the seat, 29.99 for the gasket!!!!!!1

The primary gasket can be reused sometimes.
Nothing additional was added.
I did take a primary screw to ace and purchased really long ones of the same thread and i then cut the heads off the ones i purchased.
The purchased screws made it really easy to align the gasket and maintain it in place along with the cover as i put the cover on. Remove one screw and insert the correct one and repeat.

If I am reusing it after two or three times, yea will put a little on one side, but never on a new one.

I've been lucky so far. No sealer ever used and I still run my original primary gasket. When it does ever leak I'll replace it but there's not a drop under my bike of anything, ever. Just have to be careful with it.

(My Road Glide will be 14 years old next February and just passed 130,000 miles...)

I've reused mine 3 or 4 times No problems. Don't need any extra bolts. Slip it on the pins and be careful is all.

Don't put anything on that gasket. Install it on a clean and dry surfaces. RTV can react badly on the foam material.

Can I ask where you heard/read that? Is that from a HD service buliten, from 3m, or your opinion?

I'm in the automotive gasket business and work closely with the engineers.

This is basic for all modern gaskets; unless manual specifically states to do so, do not use RTV.

The bolts are not a requirement but it makes life easier on some model years.
Saves having to balance the cover and gasket while also inserting the primary bolts since the pins on some model years are rather small and the gasket can slide off. It was not my original idea but i used it after reading it in a bike magazine and it worked great. Kinda of a cool idea also for certain automotive gaskets or parts when gasket or part is vertical.
