Default Parking tips?

Anyone have a specific set of critera they use when parking to lessen the possibility of other drivers interfering with your bike?

A friend of mine recently had a lady knock over his Softail, and it did quite a bit of damage. Also, I witnessed a lady speed into the parking space where I had my old bike parked (she didn't see my bike there and was going too fast) and -almost- hit it and knocked it over. Luckily, she stopped just short.

If I park in a parking space, I tend to find ones that only have 1 adjacent space, to cut the possibility of dumb neighbor car accidents in half. I also usually back my bike into the curb at a slight angle and of course leave it in 1st gear, that way it can't go backwards or forwards very easily.

Any other general tips?

I rarely park in parking lots, but if it's packed and I have to park near other cars, I'll back it in to the spot,
and park at an angle at the front part of the space so the bike can be clearly seen by anyone looking for a spot.
No one is going to swoop in on you that way.
Also if you park it up front like that, at a good angle, then if someone swings
out a door, it won't hit the bike..

I always try to park in a spot [i'm in NYC] where there is no one going to park in front or behind me- like the first spot before a fire hydrant, or the last spot before a corner, or a driveway. Figure cut the risk in half by parking in the "first" or "last" spot.. the less people that come near the bike, the better.

I also always park with my rear wheel touching the curb for extra security. Always use my disk lock also.

Parking spaces are sometimes rare here, so I try to leave room for another bike to share my space. I sure appreciate when I find someone else whom has done the same for me.

I won't part between cars in a lot. I'll park in the first spot if there is one, so I'm not sandwiched. I look for the stripped sections in the lot, usually right in front of the store and park there.

Here's another thread that might help... https://www.hdforums.com/forum/the-g...d-parking.html

since my bike was rear ended while parked by a 80yr old lady in her cage, I try to park the bike in places where cars have no access to it. At home, not having a garage I park my car 2/3 feet from the end of the parking space (there's a loan in front) so i can slide my bike in there and my car is protecting my bike.
in town I'm not shy of parking on sidewalks (if large) or other areas not accessible by car. haven't got a ticket so far so I keep on doing it.

I park my bike like I park anything else. Pull into the spot, whichever, wherever, whatever. Only thing I do specific with the bike is park it closer to the opening of the spot instead of all the way in to avoid someone thinking it was empty and cruising right in and hitting it.

I do this as well! Must be a southern thing. I will say though that I got a ticket in Oak Park Illinois for combat parking my bike into a spot in the parking garage about 4 years ago! Thats hard core law enforcement there!!!!

In slot parking I back into the far right side at the front of the slot. This leaves room for another bike on my left and insures I can leave the lot without hinderance from either side. Also eliminates crowding by the other bike or anyone parking in front of me. I once spent thirty minutes of my life waiting for a couple of sport bikes to move when I parked against the curb and they parked up front.

That is exactly the way I do it. I wish more bikers considered leaving room for others where parking is limited.
