Neutral cause thats what my pops taught me when driving a car. He told me it was bad for the tranny to stay clutched in for long periods.

Its only hard on the throw out bearing but today's throw out bearings last longer than a clutch. It was somewhat true back then.

The only light I will shift to neutral for is at a railroad crossing, while waiting for the train. Then I would shut it down as well.

I do this too. I also keep it in gear until I have a vehicle stopped behind me then neutral. If I didn't I would have a popeye sized left forearm on some of the rides through town.

Do you put your car in neutral at a light? I leave it in first always. You can't go anywhere in neutral.

Been driving a stick for 40+ years, and yes I do put it in neutral at a light, and where are you gonna go, it's a red light.
With the bike, I leave it in gear until a car pulls up behind me and stops, then it goes into neutral. For all you guys that leave it in gear for fear of being rear ended, are you constantly looking in your rear view mirrors and nowhere else, cause if you're not, what's the point. You'll be hit before you can do anything about it whether you're in gear or not.
Leaving the clutch pulled at a light causes more unnecessary wear on your throw out bearing and for the post above that says the bearings last longer than a clutch, do a search on throw out bearings.

Default stop light

Leave it in first gear, just in case you have to bolt from a inattentive driver. Yeah........that never happens!

Ive replace 20 clutches for every 1 throw out bearing that was bad but this is on trucks mostly. Cars may be a different animal.
