I remember seeing two bike cops years ago, riding like they were the Blue Angels. They changed lanes at the same time and leaning a lot. They had to have been communicating to do it. While it looked really cool, it looked dangerous as hell.
As for the lights, we had one bike cop here but that was years ago. In my trips to the big city, I haven't seen any.
I saw two motorcycle cops doing that just yesterday, looked pretty cool.
The last defensive driving course I attended, the instructor was specifically telling us that we could be ticketed for riding side by side. What's strange is that side by side is the only way you see the LEO's riding here. just doesn't seem right that we can be ticketed for doing the exact same thing they do.
Many states are different, but in SC and TN, riding side by side is not illegal. Many states require you to ride staggered while others do not. It is not just because they are "cops and they can." Don't forget YOUR legislators make the decisions, unfortunately cops get the raw end of the deal because they have to enforce the rules.
Secondly, yes they are trained much differently than you average motorcycle training course or advanced course.
We do have local channels that we can communicate back and forth so we know what the other is doing.

Go ahead...let me have it...I don't mind.
Hell I would love to take the cop bike course.
Granted it is like $500 and I think 2 weeks long but it would be worth it!!!
The London Police ride side by side when patroling the rual areas around London but inside the city they stagger out a bit.
I got to follow 6 of them a while back they were patroling the farm areas within the city limits and they were all so close together I would bet that if there wasn't any more than 6" between any 2 bikes, going through the curves they kept their formation perfect. As has been said above it would be something to take their riding course I know here in Ontario the course is done by Harley Davidson and costs $1800 + HST for 10 days including meals, accomidations and HD provided police bikes.
I ride by side in the right conditions only with riders I trust and have been riding with for 10 years plus. We know when to stagger if conditions demand.
1. I think everyone should be able to kill your lights in case your away from home and have a charging issue. Or at least know which wire to cut. I wouldnt recomend riding ll the time like that and have no idea why the cops are doing it.
2. Seen 1% ride like that, fast and turning at the exact same time. Its impressive but dangerous, but would prefer that than riding with dumbasses. I never seen cops ride like that but im impressed with some of those guys riding skills too.
For the cops out there i would really like to know what is the point of them riding side by side like that?

Virginia changed the law relating to this a couple of years ago: it is legal for 2 motorcycles to ride abreast in a single lane :
Code of Virginia
§ 46.2-857. Driving two abreast in a single lane.
A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives any motor vehicle so as to be abreast of another vehicle in a lane designed for one vehicle, or drives any motor vehicle so as to travel abreast of any other vehicle traveling in a lane designed for one vehicle. Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit two two-wheeled motorcycles from traveling abreast while traveling in a lane designated for one vehicle. In addition, this section shall not apply to (i) any validly authorized parade, motorcade, or motorcycle escort; (ii) a motor vehicle traveling in the same lane of traffic as a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, electric power-assisted bicycle, or moped; nor shall it apply to (iii) any vehicle when lawfully overtaking and passing one or more vehicles traveling in the same direction in a separate lane.
I suppose you can ride by yourself, but there is something cool about riding or flying as a team. Not for the timid. Bar to Bar or Wing to Wing. It is a rush. If you never did it, you will never know.
