Default Buying help for newbie

PLEASE ADVISE on good questions i should always be asking private sellers of used bikes. I am only spending 8-10k, so I wont be dealing with the newest of the new. I'll need to know what to ask and what to look for...thanks!

Just like buying a car for the most part. Service records are important if they have them, seeing the bike start up and run cold is always important as well. When people say they "warmed it up for you" proceed with caution. Look for obvious leaks, damage, etc.

It also depends on what frame you're looking for. Touring, Softail, Dyna, Sportster as well as the years they were made. Can you narrow it down some as that would help.

make sure you have a motorcycle license and they let you ride the bike. if not walk away. look at kbb price on the bike and average retail and trade value to get private seller cost. unless you really like the bike a lot pipes and other stuff added to the bike does not increase the price. that's only in a sellers head.

Pretty similar to buying a car...

Test ride
Service/Maintenance?
Accidents/Ever been laid down?
Know the value of the bike
Clear title?

Maybe I go a little overboard but I do a compression test on a used bike. Testers are fairly cheap, very easy to perform, and tell you about the quality of the motor (which can cost you as much as the bike to replace).

You can buy a new Sporty for under $10K. If this is your first bike you may want to start off small and cheap until you get the hang of it. Also, take a MSF class.
