Default How are you guys talking $$ with the dealerships? Help!?

Hey all, Im buying my first Dyna soon, gonna trade in my 01' sportster(12,000 miles) and put some money down and finance the rest. Iv come across a lot on the forums a lot of people talking the dealership down 3,4 and sometimes 5 thousand out the door!! X0

Iv never bought a new motorcycle before or a car so I no experience with haggling for a vehicle. Can some of you wiser bike buyers out there help me out? Give me a few pointers on how I can talk these guys down? they offered me 1500 for my bike which seems ridiculous and I can put about 6000 down in cash, Im looking to get the fxdls. Dealership quoted me 21,000 OTD. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Do your homework - know what your's is (realistically) worth..., know what you want..., is worth

Don't get emotional..., don't let it become personal..., be prepared to walk if a deal can't be struck that both you and the dealer are satisfied with

Their job is to make money - your job is to get what you want..., at a reasonable price - that still allows them to make some money

Try finding a still new 16 the dealer wants to move

Main thing is, don't be afraid to walk away. They're trying to sell you a bike. You don't have to try to buy one. I would offer them a number you're willing to pay for the FXDLS, say $17,000 (don't take that number as gospel, it's just off the top of my head), and if they won't move, just leave and go somewhere else. If they don't come down enough to get you to stay, it's their loss.

Work multiple dealers at once to get the best deal, don't be afraid to contact high volume dealers some distance away, it can sometimes save you a great deal of money. Be patient, you'll find the deal you want.

Sell the sportster privately. Dealer Trade is a racket. Failing that, never mention you have a trade until AFTER you've finished negotiating the purchase.

Like the others said, never get too invested in the purchase. Walk away if they aren't willing to make the deal. They need you a lot more than you need them.

Get a loan from a local credit union and buy used. Depreciation sucks it sideways.

100% agreement on all the above

#3 is your monster haggle and greatest advantage. lets you cut all the bs and "let me talk to my manager" racket.

#travel... you guys have the weird eco cans on your bikes and theres some out of state purchase nonsense but, try not to search only local dealers.

Sounds like youre trying to buy in Cali at that price. Going rate for them here in Cali. They dont move off msrp on em here, because they dont have to. The bikes sell like crazy here and they know the dmv hassle for us to get outta state. You may save a "little" bit on anothers set up costs, but not alot. Maybe 500, not thousands. The LRS sells here and they know it. You know youll get more private party, but baggers and dynas are really only things selling in Cali. For 1500, Id hold onto it personally. 6 k is plenty to ride off on a LRS.

$1500 for that bike is bordering on ridiculous. They can wholesale it for double that plus make a big chunk of cash on the new bike purchase. Shop around. When I bought mine, albeit quite a while ago but when sales were strong, there was a $2200 difference between 3 dealers here in Orange County CA.

Talk to multiple dealers. I talked to 6-7 dealers when looking for my Low Rider. Some quoted full MSRP. It came down to two who were with $200 of each other.

May want to sell your bike outright. You should do a lot better than the $1500 the dealer offered. The more variables you can take out of the deal the better. When I got mine, it was all OTD price. No trade and no financing fromt he dealer needed.
