Default Not electrical savy!

Need some assistance....I have an 08 RK FLHR, I ran a 10 ft 3.5mm ext cord under the dash/console for ear phone jack at the fore end of the seat to the handlebar mount for phone or iPod. I zip tied the ext cord in several places alongside the wire that supplies power to the dash. Is it possible the ext wire is picking up residual noise/resistance along the way because the sound coming out of the headphones is anything but music to my ears!!!???? If I bypass the ext cord and just plug in directly its fine but then I have earphone wire smacking me in the face while riding. Any help???

Usually when an audio cord or connection is really noisy or crappy it is because there is a loose connection, or bad ground connection. You get a bad hum or buzzing, I'm guessing you've already tried plugging it in about 20 times.

I don't know how much trouble it is to un-tie-wrap it and test it away from the bike. Either that or get another cord and try it. Either way, you'll probably have to remove it from the bike.

If there's that much noise coming out of the bike's cables you will need a coaxial cord that uses a braid over the signal wires. That cord still needs a good ground on one end to cut back on the noise. In other words, if your extension cord looks like a lamp cord or has the 2 cables insulated side-by-side it probably isn't shielded.

If the cord is round, it might be a braided shield cord. Unfortunately, it's easy to identify a zip-cord or lamp cord-they have the conductors side by side with a little seam in between, but braided or shielded may need to be identified on the package.

Good luck

Noise pick-up is most likely from the high voltage circuit from the coil to the spark plugs. If your cable is anywhere close to that circuit try to route it away from the spark plug wires. Also a 10 ft. cord seems a bit excessive to run from the seat to the handlebars. It probably makes a great antenna to pick-up the the ignition noise...especially if it's coiled somewhere near the coil/spark plug wires. I would probably suggest a shorter shielded cable, routed away from the high voltage circuit.

Ipods & all that other crap don't belong on bikes.

Throw that damn thing over the fence & listen to the music of your PIPES!!
