I'm a Road Glide owner, but I agree with previous posters who recommend the Road King as the "do it all" bike.
The detachable windshield can come off if you like (although I'd never ride without a windshield). You can even take the windshield off, and put on one of several available aftermarket fairings (with stereo) for a longer trip, if you wish.
Although you can't really take the bags off a RK and still have it look good, I doubt anyone would want to take the hard bags off, once they get used to them.
The new Switchback looks to be a competitor to the Road King. Although I can't confirm it (perhaps others will), looks like any fairing that will fit on the RK mounts will also fit the Switchback. Might look a bit oversized, though.

As an avid hunter I have more than 1 firearm. If I were a golfer I'd need more than one club. I wouldn't be much of a mechanic if all I had was an 8" crescent wrench...so to try and do "everything" well with one HD? They haven't made the FXDXT since 2003...the Road King is a good 2up tourer and the lightest of the FLH line, but still a massive, slow, ponderous beast. The wife and I each have Dynas, probably the best compromise for North American travelling...

Strip it down, pack it up. Road King does it all, with or with out the wind shield. But I prefer a Street Glide.

Road King or Ultra E-Glide. I've owned both, currently an Ultra, and frankly, I'd never own anything but one of these again. The Road King can be any bike you want, from cruiser to tourer quickly and easily and, IMO, is the most cost effective way to get it all. Bought my first one back in '02 while contemplating a Fat Boy. By the time I figured the cost of adding a windshield, bags etc. to the Fat Boy, the Road King made a LOT of sense. (Not to mention being more comfortable and all that).
Frankly, when I bought my Ultra back on '12, I was considering another Road King. What tipped me? I ride a LOT of two up with my wife and daughter and the Ultra just made more sense for that. Now that I own it, I think the ultimate would be to simply have both, LOL.
