Hopefully your base commanders will follow suit. Us Marines have been off of the reflective stuff for a while now because supposedly it was actually causing drunk drivers to swerve into into them at night. I don't know how true that is, but I am glad that we don't have to wear it anymore.
I wouldn't doubt that at all. At home sation I work night shift and I've had more people cut me off, pull in front of me and turn out in front of me with that vest on. Before I came in I obviously never wore that stupid thing and only had 1 close call. Now I get a close call every time I ride to work at night.
The US Air Force Traffic Safety Program, AFI 91-207 dated 12 Sep 13, has
been published and there has been a major change in the Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) requirement. The AFI no longer makes, "brightly colored
during the day and retro reflective at night" mandatory PPE, but it still
encourages the use of these to help rider visibility (paragraph 3.5.4.3).
Also, the Installation Commander has issued a policy letter that echoes this
sentiment in paragraph three of the attached policy letter. Security Forces
personnel have been notified and the Safety Office was assured that all gate
personnel were briefed of the requirements as of yesterday morning. That
being said, there may still be some growing pains. If you decide not to wear
"brightly colored during the day and retro-reflective at night", you may
want to keep the commanders policy letter in your pocket for a month or two
The commander also put out a policy letter that say's reflective material is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. Thank goodness I don't have to wear that stupid vest. I may still wear it if I'm on night shift when I get home, but if they put me on day shift I will never wear that stupid thing.
I've been out only a few years. The AF has always been overboard in adding to the basic rules. At Vandyland, it was all about making a change to something to create a performance report bullet. I'm glad to see they are changing that. I never understood why the AF required military to wear it, but not civilians on base. Afterall, the AF didn't require AD to wear it off base.
I remember putting the Base Safety NCO in a bad spot. He wouldn't give me a temp pass because I hadn't completed the MSF course (had to wait a month) even though I'd had a MC endorsement for 20 years. I wanted to see his supervisor. I let the supervisor know he had a bigger problem than worrying about licensed riders awaiting a course date. I questioned the lack of enforcement when it came to those scooters (pocket choppers?) that were hot in the early 2000s. I mentioned that there was no stipulation in the reg about 50cc or less, and besides, riders were using BICYCLE helmets!!!
I didn't get a temp pass, but it got the smug 'me TSGT, you MSgt: I'm in control' look off his face when we left the Supervisor's office.

Not sure why you are so proud of that...You were WRONG...I don't understand folks in the Air Force that fight having to follow AFIs especially NCOs...It is a basic NCO responsibility to follow and enforce Air Force standards whether you agree with them or not...I am glad the PPE requirements have changed but I followed them to the letter while they were in force. It's MY JOB...Rant over...Nothing more to see here...
