Thanks for all the replies definitly gives me some things to think about.
I will be going out the week before the rally and riding and sightseeing.

Another thing for me to consider is I really enjoy concerts so who has the best concerts?

A couple of beers is plenty for me but I like to be where the party is and watch everyone else. All the fun but skip the hangover.

I took my turn at the marriage thing, that ended badly so now as long as my son has the fridge stocked up all is good.

Worst case my brother driving my truck and camper backs out and I will have to load the bike in the truck and tow the camper myself. I really want to ride out but being out there for two weeks I want my camper.

Depends what you're looking for in a campground.

Party, close to town, east side
Buffalo Chip
Glencoe

Quieter, shade, close to town, west side
Hog Heaven

By the night, cheaper, farther from town
Elk View - right on the interstate so it's not quiet, not much shade
The Spur

If you are not going to go to any of the shows look at places out and away from town

In spite of my buddies best attempts to describe to me the "Chip" I was very surprised as to what it was really like. We tent camped for the week. I discovered that my buddies were there for a week to sit and drink beer or go to town and sit and drink beer. Being from Indiana I wanted to RIDE. First time for me to go west on a bike, or much of anything for that matter. I was blown away by the night time partying. I remember one night the Hells Angels were there selling balloon of nitrous oxide for $5. Must have had a dozen or so tanks and long lines waited turns to purchase. Everyone was walking around with these huge balloons getting high. So funny to see. Steppenwolf played on the "main" stage which back then was the only one. What a blast. What a trip. Has never been anything like that again.
To all in the forum that have stayed at or visited the Buffalo Chip for the Sturgis Rally ... we are planning to attend in 2014 and are thinking of staying at the Chip in our toy hauler for the week.

Can anyone suggest which RV site is the best? I was thinking something close to the Amphitheater like "Stage Hill Camp".

We plan to secure the RV site around the first of the year.

If you leave a bit later in the morning it can take quite a bit of time to get through town even if you know all the shortcuts. I've been going there a long time and still stay on the east side 'cuz it's kind of like going home. I always run into riders that I only see at Sturgis and I enjoy their company. One last thing ... Never mind, I'm better than that.

I went in 2011 for my honeymoon. I was going to stay at the chip almost booked it but then got totally freaked about what I read about the bathrooms. We booked at the broken spoke for the week. Camping there was great, the bands were decent, price was hella cheap, the pool was fun. The bathrooms were clean and always had a shower free ( esp at pool shower house ). We rode in with gear on our bikes ( my sporty his road king ). We were there for 9 days. We went to the chip for a night to see a concert. That was fun. We were at the spoke for 9 days. The only thing that got old was it was a bit to get home at night so. We never stayed out late and the bus that comes seemed like it would take awhile since the spoke is 11 miles from town and traffic at night is bad. That said we had a blast and I liked the broken spoke.
We are going back in 2015 for the 75th. We have decided to stay at glencoe to be where there is a party but be close to town. We will likely spend 1 night at the chip watching a band. Part of why we decided at the chip for the week is two fold. Still not comfortable on the bathroom front and two they ban you from bringing in your own booze to get you to buy beer in their store or drink at their bar. I drink micro brews and drink decent wine. Plus I am not paying for a mix drink everytime I want a cocktail at my campsite.
On booking the cheapest time is right now. All the camp ground set up the cheapest prices right after the last rally. So next sept(2014) is when we are booking for 2015. They tick up the prices a bunch in the lead up at each of the camp ground. Spoke is 99 now it will go to like 175 by rally time. Chip is like $250 for whole rally now . That will raise to like. $500. Glencoe is like 165 now but will be like $250 right at rally time.

But if you are looking at the spoke it was fun. The bar, the bands, the pool. Camping was easy. No one cared what we drank at the campsite. Clean bathroom . Plus price was great. And it wasn't too loud to sleep or too sprawled out so we didn't feel like we were hiking a mile to bathroom, pool, or the bar.

Stayed at Hog Heaven a couple times. Easy access to riding. DaBus stops there for rides to town or out west to the big concerts. They have beer tents and some bar bands every night. Cannot say enough good stuff about them.

Book early and have fun.

What about people who don't want to camp? I don't want to haul a tent and other camping gear. Don't need anything special, just the regular bed and bathroom. Any ideas on what the costs might run too?

Cabins at the campgrounds are expensive (I think about $2500.00). I know a guy who had a room in Deadwood and it was about $1,600.00 for the week. The closer to Sturgis, the more it will cost.
