I would like to hear from some experienced HD riders/owners. How much power train noise is normal on these air-cooled beasts? The noise I'm hearing isn't the 'rocks in the can' that others were talking about, I don't believe. However I am hearing some powertrain clatter that seems to coerelate with the engine RPMs and seems to be more prevalent the warmer the motor is. I've had a variety of bikes over the years, a lot of inline 4s though and they were really quiet, that last few Shadows that I had seemed to clatter a bit too. I was just wondering if the noise I'm experiencing is normal HD noise?
Water cooled engines can have closer tolerances between moving engine parts because the temperature of the engine can be kept more constant.
Air cooled engines have more "slop" built in them to allow for the larger temperature range (expansion and contraction). They might sound like they're coming apart (especially behind a fairing or windshield) but chances are they're not.

Thanks whaap, that is kind of what I thought. The noise is not near as bad as 'sounding like it's coming apart' but it is audible in every gear and the higher the RPMs the faster the noise seems to be. Like I said my Shadows had a similar noise also but they were extremely quiet as far as exhuast noise is concerned.
