I have an 06 Electra Glide and am coming up to the 10,000 mile service. I took it to an independent for the 5,000 service and was pleased. I am told the 10,000 mile service must be done by a harley dealer to maintain warranty. Is this true or is the stealer just trying to get more of mymoney. I also put amsoil in at 5,000 miles and really noticed the improvement. The dealer wants me to furnish the Amsoil if they do it as they cannot get it. Whats up with that!
As long as you have documentation showing that the 10,000 mile service was performed, whether it was by an independent or your self, the warranty can not be denied. As for the oil, the dealers push Harley Davidson branded oil; if you want a different brand they will quite often make it as inconvenient as they can so you will just go with what they sell. If you have a good independent shop that did the 5,000 service and you were satisfied with their work then take your bike back to them for the 10,000 mile. Or buy the service manual and do the service your self. You will learn more about your bike, and that could be a real good deal if an emergency roadside repair came up.

I just did the 10,000 on my LowRider. As long as everything on the list is done and documented your ok. Keep your receipts.
well i'm 7500 miles away from the 10.000 mile on this bile but it will be done in my garage by the resident wrench at about a 90% savings over the stealer.
I have the service manual for that bike and it doesn't say any thing about warranties it does say "Should be performed by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, unless you have the proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified." Under the Maintenance schedule it says (in a nut shell) to change all the oils, inspect that EVERYthing is working correctly, lubricate everything, and torque down the critical fasteners.

There is a very specific law, I can't remember the name, that prevents manufacturers from forcing you to use their warranty. As long as proper records are kept, you will not void your warranty. If the dealer can prove something broke out of negligence, you may have a problem... so, have an indy you trust do it, or do it yourself and make sure you do it properly.... the steps and checklist are detailed in the service manual, and there is really nothing to it.
personally, I created a spreadsheet in Excel, that I use for documentation. A new page is used for each service level, each item is listed out, check boxes for indentifying if the task was performed or not, notes field, mileage and VIN, etc.
If anyone is interested in using the spreadsheet, I will share.
