Hello All,
I have a 2013 Heritage, all stock. The bike accelerates normally in all gears except third. In third it acts like it is getting no or very little fuel. Even though I crank on the throttle it will not accelerate, even slowing down a little. I asked the service manager at the dealer to test ride it and his response was "Your bike is fine".
Have any of you had this experience?
Thanks,
Jeff M.
Thanks for your input.
This bike is totally stock, I haven't changed anything yet. At this point it has 3232 kilometers-2008 miles on it and it has had it's first service at 1600 kilometers-1000 miles. This condition has existed from day one. Clutch is OK, engine not lugging. I agree that if engine RPM was too low upon going into third, it would not want to pick it up, but this is not the case. After accelerating normally through first and second, the engine just dies after the change to third. If I hold onto a three quarter, or so, throttle position, it will eventually begin to pick it up, but only after an annoying delay. After changing into third, the engine exhaust becomes very quiet and the engine does not pull. If I shift into fourth the engine is back to normal and will continue to pull, but in third it becomes very lazy. Rainy season is almost over, so a trip back to the dealer may be in order. Thanks again for your help, I appreciate it.

3rd gear is one of the most powerful gears I have on my 13, I've hit 65mph in 3rd. If I were you I'd bring it back and have them check it again.
Thank you all again for taking the time to respond to this post.
With the rainy season almost over now, I'll get it into the dealer and personally take the service personnel for a ride and not let one of them go out alone. If that doesn't produce any positive result I'll send a letter off to Willie and his bunch to see what they say.
Cheers,
Jeff M.

Maybe the gears are binding. Take it up to speed in third gear and pull in the clutch. Let it coast and don't touch the brakes. If the bike looses speed quickly, you have a problem with the gears. Try it in 2nd and fourth and compare deceleration rates. Or you could just jack it up and try to spin the back wheel in gear with the clutch pulled in. The wheel should spin pretty freely.
