Default Primary cover difference

I have been looking for a good used primary cover for my 2011 FXDC. I have found several for Touring models and very few decent ones for the Dynas or Soft tails. Without me sounding too ignorant, could someone please tell me what the difference is since they are both 96 cubes? What keeps them from interchanging between the touring models and the Dyna/Soft tails? Any information is appreciated.

The Dyna, Softail, & Touring bikes have 3 different types of tranny cases, to accomodate the rubber mount & counterbalanced motors. Therefore, they have 3 different primary covers. The Touring cover is short, while the Dyna & Softail covers are longer. The newer covers do not have an inspection hole for the primary since they no longer require manual adjustment, and they fasten from the inside of the motor assembly rather than the outside. Some Dynas have a hole for the shifter assembly in the cover So there are many variables.

Back in the day, practically everything was interchangeable.

Thanks dickey,

I have seen some really good buys for the touring, never thought about the transmission. I have to change the tranny case also.

Could you elaborate?
