Not exactly. Using your example, if a chafed positive wire was compromised against the chassis/frame then the circuit would be complete back to the battery negative as the battery negative cable is connected directly to the frame. Then the ignition system is grounded through the engine and the engine is grounded through the chassis and back to the battery. The earth ground is nowhere in the equation.

Just think circuit of current flow from battery positive to battery negative. Electricity is always trying to find its way back to the battery and it will take the path of least resistance.

Now discussing static electricity that is a completely different topic. It is not much of a problem on automobiles and motorcycles because the rubber tires act pretty well as an insulator. However, our bodies can contain static electricity that builds up similar to dragging your feet across the carpet. This static electricity can cause issues when working around sensitive, expensive electronic components so extra care should be taken to discharge this static electrical charge prior to replacing components that contain circuit boards with small microprocessors and/or logic boards. I have gotten in the habit of grabbing the frame or chassis prior to commencing work anytime I am going to be working around electronic equipment such as ignition control modules or ABS modules.

Mike.

I am not an electrician by no means but i remember my dad having a ground strap on the back of the cars....
Yes but u need a compleat circuit for flow, the power co uses the earth for this your bike uses the frame.
The strap In the car is for static charge buildup.

I've never had a problem with my battery draining or going dead prematurely. However, I was at the local HD dealer picking up stuff, and one of the guys in the parts department told this battery drain issue through the kickstand is true and tried to sell me a $5 piece of plastic. I didn't believe him, but I used some rubber at home as insulation, just in case.
