My friend told me that the cartel started highjacking cars and bikes of people using it and just shooting them right there on the spot and leaving them for the buzzards. They woudl take their vehicle and no one would know for days where they were, in additon they would put the bodies of the people they killed in cars they stole in the out there in the middle of no where and sooner or later someone would find a vehicle with 5-10 dead people in it on the side of the road. I did not see any of this but that is what I was told. That is enoguh for me. when local tells me do not go somewhere I do not go there. I do not live by someone elses's lead but I am also smart enough to listen to those that know, if you catch my drift.
Wow, sounds like reason enough to stay out of the entire country.
I don't mind the interstates. At least everyone is going in the same direction and for the most part only have to worry about people jumping out in your lane trying to get around a slower vehicle when entering the highway. either on your bike or in your 4wheeler after a while you get to read morons like that.
Interstates stress me out on a bike. Trucks, zombie packs of rolling roadblocks & that one ******* who feels morally compelled to ride your ***.
I'll slab it, when I have to. No choice, if ya gotta cover some ground, but I prefer to slow down & take the back roads, check out the countryside, relax & sample some of the local flavor.
Eyeball a road map of Idaho, which has a dearth of interstates, as it's basically a rural state with secondary roads. I-90 up in North Idaho is only about 74 miles long btw WA and MT.
Not into droning down the stuporslabs as the secondary roads are far more enjoyable. However, if I was to ride from Boise to the Outlaws & Angels bar in Bliss and back, would take I-84 there and US-30/ID-78/farm roads back.
Idaho to the SF Bay Area usually means US-95 to Winnemucca, NV then I-80 west. It's not bad until south of Burns Jct (95/78) in Orygun. Can be rather time consuming if you obey the repressive 55mph speed limit in Orygun (I don't except within town limits).
Other option is OR-20 through Burns/Hines then US-395 south to Lakeview. I then grab OR-140 to Klamath Falls and onwards to Kalifas. More options using that route. Besides, I like the Redwood Coast.
That said, US-101 btw Leggett and Crescent City in Kalifas is a good ride but I-5 blows chunks.
Motorcycles, to me, are all about getting away from it all. A deserted freeway under a full moon is far different from one clogged with traffic during rush hour.

I can't say that I have really thought about the pros or cons of the interstate. To me, it is just another road. It can can be a very convenient option but at the same time, a bit uninteresting, depending on the specific nature of the surroundings. IMO, it is a lot more fun to ride my bike without the windshield on the highway but on a long trip I use the shield. Riding I-90/I-70 on my bike to Sturgis this year, I learned a few things:
For me, riding a motorcycle for long distances on the highway can be just as boring at times as riding long distances in a car. The time goes by faster, however, as there is a lot of obvious sensory inputs and you smell and see things you don't while in a car. But those long straight stretches of interstate from Ohio through Iowa can be a bit mundane. The scenery is all the same and there is usually one smell -- cow poo. Once you get into SD, it is interesting again and the scenery picks up.
