I am looking into getting a set of saddle bags for my '06 FLSTN. Just for general gear. Military unifom, hygiene gear, lunch anf some basic tools.
What are some problems I might run into with leather bags? What should I avoid? What should I look for?
basically quality of stitching, weather/sun proofing. and whether you need brackets to keep the bags from hitting moving/hot bits at the back of the bike
Hi
Common leather saddlebag problems are... leather fading, saddlebags losing shape/sagging under use, no locks on the saddlebags, expensive mounting hardware, stitching falling apart and the usual high price.
I'm a representative for Viking Bags, Our saddlebags are pretty well known on the forums here. We try to offer the best saddlebags available for our price category. Check us out, many of our saddlebags have locks and all include mounting hardware. Our bags won't fade or sag because we use reinforced synthetic leather. For our price point, we're pretty much unbeatable. http://www.vikingbags.com/harley-dav...saddlebags.htm
I have viking bags and like them. They hold a lot of stuff and a great price. I think the quality is good too. One bag I have my tools, rain gear, mil spec reflective vest. Other bag is never full, but can be. I carry another set of gloves in there, glasses, goggles and my half shell fits in there when parked at work or wherever. Camping I had a half gallon of apple pie wrapped in my rain gear and it fit fine. I've had them for about a year and ride in some rain here in WA and nothing has ever got wet. Actually they seal so well I left wet gloves in there and went out to sea for a month and came back to moldy gloves. I don't recommend leaving wet gear in them...lol!!
I don't have a Softail model but I installed the Leather Pros on my Dyna a while back and although I don't ride with them a lot, when I do I have been very pleased with them.
I did a complete installation write up and review of them back when I installed them. I like the fact that when removed all that is visible are two small studs that don't detract from the overall appearance of the bike.
i recently received my ironbags for my heritage and they are really built well nice heavy leather all mounting hardware included, have not mounted them yet.
Check out their website and yes they are a bit pricey but you know what they say
