I'd say this is one of those "Must do" motorcycle trips. I did this ride last year on the way back from York after taking the factory tour. I toured the factory in the morning, came back to Gettysburg and spent a few hours in the battleground (not enough time) and then headed for Skyline Drive. Made it down to Luray that day. Finished Skyline Drive and traveled to Fancy Gap the next day. I think I stopped at about milepost 200, there's a Days Inn on a hill behind a truckstop. On down to Asheville the next day and had a late lunch with my son, then home to Charlotte.
Skyline Drive is very easy to ride, lazy turns, pavement was in great shape last year. Several times I would set the cruise at 35 mph and ride for miles before coming upon a turn where I needed to slow down. I made this trip in mid-August and a leather jacket and a set of chaps felt good in the morning. Lots of shade.
Unbelieveable amount of wildlife, breathtaking scenery. I will do this ride again, it's a great experience.
Bought a house in Marion Virginia last year. I am still deployed overseas and have not lived in it yet. This sounds like a nice ride to take once I do get back there though. Thanks for all the info.
