I started on the southern end , stayed in Staunton VA at the northern end . There's a Hampton Inn real close to the local HD dealer (Shenendoah) it's a short ride up to either Skyline drive or the BRP from there , about 15 miles well worth it !

rickshog, My wife and I will be heading down to Shenandoah National Park next Monday the 7th to ride Skyline Drive down to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We will be staying in the town of Luray, which is about 30 miles down route 340 from Front Royal where the Drive begins. Luray is over on the Valley side of the ridge. Read in Iron Works magazine about this great little place to stay called The Hillside Motel. A great old fashioned one-story motel that caters to bikers. Just made my reservations tonight. Only $54 a night! There are plenty of the modern motel chains around, but I'd rather stay at a place where my scoot is right outside my window rather than three stories down from me. Google Shenandoah National Park and get on the NPS website. That will tell you everything you need to know.

As you've seen, Skyline Drive starts at Front Royal, VA and ends in Staunton, VA where the Blue Ridge Parkway begins. Skyline Drive is 105 miles long with a 35 mph speed limit. Most people drive 40-45. The Parkway ends at the Cherokee indian reservation at the foot of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. BRP is 469 miles long with a 45 mph speed limit. In some places I drive it at 60-70 mph and in others 20 mph is about as fast as I can go. The southern end of the parkway is the best. The last 100 miles or so is awesome! When I drive it, I get on it at Front Royal and get off at Cherokee. All 574 miles of it BOTH ways! It's my favorite road in the world and ride it every year... there and back! I takes me 3 days from start to finish and we enjoy every second of it! If you want to stop and see the sights, plan on 4 or 5 days total to do both roads.

The wife and I are planning on riding down from Pa, August 20th-24th. It's 510 miles to Front Royal so thanks Mac for the info on the Hillside Motel.Planning on riding the Drive and Parkway on Monday & part of Tuesday. Any advice or info? This will be the wife's second big trip on the bike, so I don't want to push it too much. Thanks. Timmer

A place the wife and I like to stay and eat is Blowing Rock, NC. Try the Storie Street Grill. Awesome food and an allaround beautiful place.

I did the Gatlinburg, TN to skyline Drive Va. and let tell you it was SUPER....!!! The Blueridge portion was about 467 miles and I'd do it again in a heart beat. The southern portion has the higher elevations with a lot of tunnels through the Great Smokies.

Here's a site on the riding conditions for the BRP. It's updated quite often. Just scroll down to current riding conditions and click on it.
