I'm a pro photographer and after research last year ended up buying JVC. I liked the shape better and it had multiple built in functions that were each $100+ add ons to the gopro. Any off the name brand cameras will work, and all have their faults. As small as they are I'll bet battery life is limited across the board. Just make sure you add up all the add-ons to the gopro that are standard on brands like Sony and JVC so you understand the total cost before you buy.
My wife got me a GoPro Hero3 Silver two months ago for Chanukah and it has been nothing but frustration. It is without a doubt the most complex to operate and the 62 pages of instructions are virtually impossible to decipher. Among other issues, I can not get it to "talk" to my iPhone 5s and it will only record in 8min30sec chunks. There are very few motorcyclists using the GoPro on Maui and my next step will be to see if one of the guys at the surf shop can help me set it up. Wish me luck... Hey bro
As with anything in life nowadays, Go check out tutorials on YouTube, that way u have YOUR camera in hand while watching video step by step, if you need to pause to go over some things u might not clearly understand, you can without feeling the pressure of feeling like an idiot by some surf pro in a shop. The GoPro is the bomb. When using it for a bike ride long distance, put in on time lapse to take a picture every 2/4/5/10 seconds, that way you can show your 3 hour ride in 4 minutes. POV Video gets boring, change it up
There as only 2 buttons on it, what can be so hard.
One button takes you through the selections, and the other lets you pick details of that selection, it really easy actually, you just have to believe and want to learn it
Any questions hit me up
GoPro is the leader in the field and I don't think you can go wrong buying one. Mine is a few years old and they've made several great upgrades on the newer models which has tempted me to upgrade. Learning curve is steep but no worse than any new electronic product especially one that you don't use regularly. I made myself a cheat sheet to help with that. I even had to put labels on the user controls to remember what was what . Bought just about every mounting option available from GoPro along with some RAM mounts.
Another GoPro user here on my helmets. I have the older(est) model, been using it for about 3 years and it still takes great videos in HD. I have the add-on attachment that displays the menus and lets you see what you're recording, I think that's more intuitive now with the newer versions. No complaints here. I do like the fact you can control the newer cameras with a smart phone, but I'm so used to mine, it's easy for me to use it and has been very reliable and takes great videos.
I think it's funny how they sold peeps on the fact of using ur phone with the GoPro.
It's an action cam, how can one be extreme kayaking, sky diving, motorcycle riding etc, and be looking at the shot and clicking the shutter.
Keep your hands on you toy and let it do it's thing
I urban mush my dogs, and this little rescued pitty I got took to it well. This video was when I hooked him up for the first time by himself. He took me for a ride big time!!
Here is another I made with same dog using different angles and mounts (Even the mount I made for the Dogs POV)
I will say that I don't trust any mount and always attach a leash to mine just in case

Better yet, check out this video I made in November during out annual Salmon run, when the salmon swim from the ocean all the way up to the hatchery in Sacramento. I filmed this the day they opened the gate to the fish ladder, was crazy fun, but the views are bomb
Check it out
That's me on the drums in the music I used also
Let me know what you think
Peace!!!
Regardless of camera, could I make a suggestion? Please consider mounting your camera anywhere but your helmet.
Movies made on helmet mounts inevitably cause "viewer whiplash" every time you turn your head (which happens all the time), unless you do it r-e-a-l-l-y slowly. I've always thought that mounting it to the bike itself gets a much more satisfying result.

This is why I have mine on the bike. Also, can't get caught checking out the hot girl at the roadside :-)
