Dumb question: What does everyone take their front wheels off for? Brake pad change? Or do the bearings go bad so often that they need to be replaced frequently?

It's a pretty common practice to remove the front wheel to put on a new tire.
I use this one,
i take mine off for tire changes also. Its cheaper for me to buy a tire online remove the wheel then take it to an indy shop and have them mount and balance.

One thing I noticed by doing that is you have to be real careful about the date on the tire. Buying online sometimes they like to send a tire that has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.

Never had that problem with the vendors I've used. In fact, the tires I've got were usually only a couple of months old.
Just saying it happens. A friend ordered a pair and the front was from the year previous. It was a real hassle getting it replaced with one from the current year.
