Most of my riding is just me and the wife on the back. We sometimes make a ride with a group that varies from 5-35 bikes. The trips are well planned out and the route put into HD ride planner. That way you can look and decide if you want to go or not. The group is very organized and rides safely. So...both solo and group for us.
Been riding by myself 5 yrs and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Mainly because most of my riding is to & from work each day - only occasional joy riding in the boonies every other weekend or so. Fact is, I'm a bit of a loner and none of my few friends ride. Not that I wouldn't want to go on a group ride (if the opportunity presented itself) but I love the spontineity of the lone ride - changing my mind and taking alternate routes to/from where ever, stopping or continuing on as I please, going down that road I didn't notice the last time, not following or leading, etc. Seems like that would all be lost on a group ride. Guess I'll never really know till I try.
The first and last time I went on a group ride was with Suburban Harley out of Thiensville, WI. They have a deal where you get Brewers tickets and get to park in special parking and sit in the Harley Davidson seating section. They went on I94, which I avoid at gametime even in a truck. One of the riders lowsided in the rain, his bike popped up, kept going, richocheted off the median. I realized that even though it was 50 feet away, it was going to richochet towards me and I sped up and it went 10 yards behind me. I was done with group rides.
Also like the freedom of going when I want stopping when I want. I would ride with a small group of friends, if they knew how to ride in the rain, and staggered.
I have gone on trips with 1 or 2 friends, but don't consider that a group.
Not a fan of group rides. Small handful of guys I know & trust is okay; past that, no thanks.
Used to hang out quite a bit with a club & enjoyed riding in formation with them. Side by side & wheel to wheel, but those cats could flat-out ride & knew how to communicate on the road.
We ride staggered formation. It's pretty fun. I always get a kick out of the Japanese and European tourists gawking and taking pictures of us as we ride through small sierra foothill towns around this area. I ride alone alot too. If I always waited for the group rides I wouldn't get to ride as much as I like too. It's all good.....

Riding with others takes practice, the more you do it the easier it becomes. Some people are just plain loners nothing wrong with that, others enjoy the opposite.
Find a couple of good friends that ride. Once you understand each others riding styles and build a trust, it is much like riding as one. Although there are certainly times that you need that alone time.
