Default Garbage Wagons

Anyone remember when "baggers" were called garbage barges or garbage wagons? Old man's rides. The polite term was "dresser".

I have seen those terms used in books and magazines, but no one has ever called one of my bikes that.

Some people still call them that. Just like people rip on any bike they don't own.

I've been calling them baggers for a long time. Probably mid 90s.

Funny. In my circles, they were always called dressers. Over the last several years I've noticed other riders looking at me like I'm speaking french when I call them that.

I've tried, but "bagger" still doesn't sound right to me. I decided I'm too old to change now, so I just live with the looks.

Garbage Wagons was, I believe, first coined in the late 60's from Sonny Barger from the H.A. It was used to describe the Hydra Glides, Duo Glides, and Electra Glides, or pretty much anything from the FL family, but then spread to mean any stock Harley. After the bikes were "chopped" or had anything that caused excess weight and reduced speed were they deemed worthy of being considered a true ride.

One of my riding buddies bikes was always called the "Couch" his license plate advertises it. Dresser, Hog, Harley, 74, Two Cylinder Vibrator were all universal words meaning one thing to the crowd I always rode with.
